Box ScoreAlfred, NY – Ryan Cardiff (Albany, NY) caged four goals but a late push was not enough as the SUNY Canton men's lacrosse team dropped a 10-7 decision to host Alfred State College on Saturday.
The Pioneers (1-11) got off to a quick start scoring the contest's first four goals including a pair from Aaron Buck. Cardiff got the Roos (1-8) on the board with 3:23 left in the opening quarter on a man-up opportunity.
Buck and Cardiff exchanged a pair of goals in the first nine minutes of the second period but the Pioneers added two scores in the final 3:36 to lead 8-3 at intermission.
Steve Novak (Seymour, CT) got SUNY Canton within four on his fourth of the season 2:45 into the second half but Alfred State got a tally each from Buck and Teddy Alvarado to take a commanding 10-4 lead into the final frame.
Chris Gamble (Carthage, NY), Cardiff and Novak caged three consecutive goals but time ran out on the Roos.
SUNY Canton controlled the game statistically holding an advantage in shots on goal (34-21), ground balls (42-40), and face-offs (11-10). However, the story of the game was Pioneer goalie Ryan Amidon who had an incredible game stopping 27 shots.
Corey Spuck (Rochester, NY) recorded 11 saves for the Roos.
Gamble tallied game-highs of 11 ground balls and 11 face-off wins, while Cardiff added nine ground balls and
Tony Carden (Franklin, MA) finished with three caused turnovers.
