Men’s Hockey Falls Just Short in Overtime Despite Strong Third Period

Box Score

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton men's ice hockey team overcame a two-goal third period deficit to tie the game late, but visiting SUNY Cortland prevailed 6-5 in overtime in front of a packed crowd on Friday evening at the Roos House.

The Roos (7-13-1) got on the board first at the 12:25 mark of the first on a brilliant individual play by Dave Schneider (Indianapolis, IN). He skated the puck in between two defenders and made a beautiful deke sneaking the puck past a sprawled out Kollyn Jones past the blocker and inside the left post.

The Red Dragons (8-9-3) responded just 31 seconds later on a defensive zone giveaway. Kevin Antonik picked off a pass from behind the net and beat Louie Puig (Chicago, IL) glove side. Cortland made it 2-1 with 1:10 left in the first on Nick Zappia's team-leading 20th goal of the season. He converted on a scrum out in front as Dan Broderick and Darren McCormick earned helpers on the play. The visitors led 2-1 after one.

SUNY Canton tied it at two just 1:25 into the second on with the skater advantage. Taylor Pickering (Marine City, MI) fired a shot from the blue line as Kasey Kulczycki (Laval, QUE) redirected it past Jones.

Cortland regained its lead at the 3:50 mark when Josh LaRose collected a rebound from point blank range and lifted it over the blocker of Puig. Tommy Nolan and Jeff Vanzant were credited with assists on the play.  The Red Dragons made it 4-2 less than two minutes later when Michael Mascaro skated into the zone and made a quick pass from the right circle to Casie Garrison waiting at the left post. He quickly put it into the open left side of the net. Mike Davie also earned an assist on the score.

Schneider scored his second of the game off a pass from Eric Witzel (Ottawa, ON) at 5:15 of the third to get SUNY Canton within one. Just 41 seconds later Witzel buried his team-leading 11th of the season off the set-up from Pickering.

Zappia regained the lead for the Red Dragons at 9:30 of the third as he registered his 100th career point. Thomas Crabtree (Knoxville, TN) came up huge with his first collegiate score with only 5:52 remaining in regulation. Ben Beasley (Burlington, ON) was credited with the assist. After playing the last five plus minutes of regulation scoreless the teams would skate to overtime.

Just eight seconds into the extra session McCormick came up with the game-winner. He fired a shot from just outside the left crease that was turned aside by Puig, but the rebound deflected off a defender into the right side of net.

Puig stopped 30 shots in net for the Roos, while Jones made 30 saves for the Red Dragons. These two teams will have a rematch on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at the Roos House.
