Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team earned a 2-0 victory in its afternoon match against Berea College to record a split on the opening day of the 2015 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Championships hosted on the campus of SUNY Canton.
The Roos (27-10) defeated the Mountaineers 2-0 (25-22, 25-21) after falling 2-1 (25-15, 19-25, 15-17) to Carlow University in the opener.
Match 1 – Box ScoreThe Roos started their first match of the tournament on fire jumping out to a 13-8 lead en route to a convincing 25-15 victory. The Celtics battled back to knot the best of three match at one with a 25-19 victory. Carlow jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the deciding third stanza and led 14-9 just one point away from match point. Behind the serve of
Lindsay Bryer (Wilson, NY) the Roos scored five straight points to knot the game at 14-14. The teams exchanged points before Carlow closed out the match with back-to-back points for the 17-5 victory.
Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, NY) led the attack with 10 kills and nine digs, while
Haley Riley (Lowville, NY) posted eight kills.
Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, ON) and Bryer led the effort defensively combining for 26 digs, while
Peyton Robinson (Bloomfield, NY) assisted 25 points.
Match 2 – Box ScoreSUNY Canton took care of business in a thrilling two set victory in its afternoon match on Thursday. The Roos finished with 17 kills compared to 11 for Berea, but the Mountaineers committed 15 costly hitting errors.
Morgan Wicks (Hartford, NY) and Cornish led the way with five kills apiece, while Carroll recorded a match-high 12 digs. Robinson tallied 15 assists and two service aces.
The Roos are back in action for the second day of pool play on Friday. They take on NHTI at 11:30 a.m. followed by Rochester College at 2:30 p.m. Both matches will take place in the Roos House.
Following pool play the top four teams in each pool will advance to the quarterfinals, which begin at 4:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. in both Dana Hall and the Roos House.
