Strong Finish Leads Cortland Past Men’s Hockey

CHS BOX SCORE

Cortland, NY – The SUNY Canton men's hockey team got within one score of host SUNY Cortland, but the Red Dragons scored back-to-back goals to earn a 5-2 win on Friday evening.

Cortland (2-3-1) got on the board first as Tommy Nolan netted his second of the season four minutes into the game. The Roos (1-6-0) responded on the power play just more than two minutes later when Nick Vasilopoulos (Montreal, QC) slotted his first of the season off passes from Kyle Matsumoto (Walnut, CA) and Brett Costello (Lombardy, ON).

In a high scoring start to the game Sam Pinsler regained the Cortland lead at 8:27 on his first of the season. The Red Dragons led 2-1 after the first.

Cortland extended their lead to two just six seconds into the middle period when Shane Bennett lit the lamp in shorthanded fashion. His unassisted goal would prove to be the eventual game-winner.

Josh Sova (Oswego, NY) responded just more than midway through the frame netting his fourth of the season off the setup from Kasey Kulczycki (Laval, QUE) at 11:07. Cortland added an insurance marker just 61 seconds later to regain the two goal advantage after 40 minutes of play.

Andrew McCann tacked on a power play goal in the third period for the Red Dragons leading to the 5-2 final. Josh Erickson (Woodbury, MN) turned aside 30 shots for the Roos, while Drew Weigman made 25 saves for Cortland.
