Canton, NY – The men's basketball team used a 12-2 run over a key five-minute stretch in the second half to defeat visiting Vermont Technical College, 62-49, Sunday evening.
With 14:24 remaining in the contest the Roos scored 12 of the next 14 points to take control of the game, moving ahead 49-40 wit
h 9:39 to play.
Khalil Bratton (Queens, NY) started the spurt with a bucket inside and
Scott Dixon (Brooklyn, NY) followed with a hit from behind the arc on Senior Night.
After
Romario Fletcher (Queens, NY) split a pair at the charity stripe
Sam Annorh (Queens, NY) and
Tyler Ellison (New York, NY) converted back-to-back fast break lay-ins to extend the lead to seven. Ellison capped the run with a finish in the paint off a pretty pass from
Scott Bartenstein (Potsdam, NY).
The Knights would get no closer than eight the remainder of the way as the Roos controlled the game and clock with their defense and methodical offensive possessions.
SUNY Canton opened the game with eight straight points, four of which came from Annorh. The Roos largest lead of the opening stanza came at 12, when
Rashad Richardson (Rochester, NY) converted a lay-up off a Dixon pass to make it 18-6.
Vermont Tech used a 12-4 run to knot the score at 29-29 with 34 seconds left in the half. Annorh hit Fletcher with an alley oop from just inside half court as Fletcher flushed down the jam to give the Roos a 31-29 lead at halftime.
Annorh had game-highs of 19 points and five assists to go with five rebounds. Ellison notched his third double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Bratton chipped in 12 points, while Fletcher posted 11 points and eight rebounds.
Jamal Hughes paced the Knights with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Tyrie Winslow added 11 points. SUNY Canton outrebounded Vermont Tech 42-36 including a 17-10 mark on the offensive glass.
The Roos forced the Knights into 20 turnovers that led to a 23-9 margin in points off turnovers. SUNY Canton also controlled points in the paint (44-26) and fast break points (22-8).
