Cortland, NY – The SUNY Canton men's ice hockey team scored three third period goals, two on the power play and the other short-handed, to earn a 6-3 victory against host SUNY Cortland Tuesday evening on the road.
Kenneth Orlando (Chalfont, PA) broke a 3-3 tie just 33 seconds into the third period when he lit the lamp for a team-best fifth time this season off a pass from
Josh Sova (Oswego, NY). At the 7:15 mark of the period in a 5-on-3 situation Sova set up his second straight goal as
Kyle Matsumoto (Walnut, CA) beat Red Dragon goaltender Kollyn Jones for the two-goal lead. Down 5-3, Cortland pulled Jones and Matsumoto scored his second goal of the period, this one short-handed, for the 6-3 final.
Trailing 1-0 early on the Roos responded scoring three straight times. The puck found the back of the net 4:32 into the first off of the stick of Orlando.
George Curry (Schaumburg, IL) and
Thomas Crabtree (Knoxville, TN) were credited with assists on the play.
In a span of less than two minutes the game went from knotted at 1-1 to a 3-1 SUNY Canton lead as Sova and
Brett Costello (Lombardy, ON) netted unassisted markers 1:58 apart. The Red Dragons (2-5-1) added a goal with 1:02 left in the first as the Roos led 3-2 after one.
A Cortland score 15:15 into the second stanza knotted the game at three apiece after two, setting up a dominant third period for SUNY Canton.
Spencer Landry (New Hartford, NY) turned aside 33 shots in goal for the Roos (1-5-1). The power play proved crucial in the game as the Roos went 3-for-6 with the skater advantage, while the Red Dragons were 0-for-5.
