Canton, NY – Sophomore
Eric Witzel (Ottawa, ON) scored his first goal of the season to tie the game early but Hamilton College scored two goals each in the second and third periods en route to a 5-1 victory against SUNY Canton on Saturday evening in the Roos House.
Hamilton scored the opening goal of the game 13:39 into the first. Robbie Murden found Pat Curtis open in the slot who wristed a shot upper 90 past the stick side of
Louie Puig (Chicago, IL) to give the Continentals the early lead. Despite the Hamilton goal, SUNY Canton looked strong owning a 10-8 shots on goal and 16-2 faceoff advantage in the opening period.
The Roos knotted the game at one apiece 2:23 into the second. Witzel converted his first goal of the season off a scrum in front. Witzel picked up the puck in the middle of the slot off passes from
Kasey Kulczycki (Laval, QUE) and
Tyler Ralph (Middletown, NJ).
Four minutes later the Continentals regained the lead as Kenny Matheson netted his third of the season slipping the puck around the blocker of Puig. Curtis was credited with an assist on the play.
With 5:50 remaining Hamilton made it 3-1 as Murden lit the lamp on the power play off passes from Curtis and Scott Vazquez. Murden scored back-to-back goals in the third period to finish with a hat trick as the Continentals earned the 5-1 victory.
Puig stopped 22 shots for the Roos, while Charlie Fennell turned aside 24 shots for Hamilton. The Roos are back in action on Friday when they visit Manhattanville College at 7 p.m.
