Volleyball Takes Home Third Place at USCAA National Championships

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team defeated Alfred State College in straight sets on Saturday afternoon to claim third place at the 2014 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Championships.

The Roos (27-7) battled point for point with the Pioneers (25-8) but pulled away late for a 25-23 first set victory. SUNY Canton controlled the second frame from start to finish using 12 kills compared to just eight for Alfred State. The Roos faced several set points in the third stanza trailing 24-18 but remarkably scored the game's final eight points to claim a thrilling, 26-24 victory to close out the match.















Morgan Bills (Walworth, NY) led the Roos with 10 kills on 25 attack attempts hitting .320. Jessica Reynolds (Oakville, ON) posted eight kills and 13 digs, while Robyn Carroll (Bowmanville, ON) and Kelsy Cornish (Honeoye, NY) were strong defensively with 14 and 17 digs, respectively. Mackenzie Mynter (Churchville, NY) added 24 assists and 10 digs.

Despite a valiant comeback effort SUNY Canton dropped its opening match of the day in the semifinals to Rochester College 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 22-25, 25-23). Reynolds finished with 17 kills and nine digs, while Caitlin Grimshaw (Adams, NY) posted 14 digs. Carroll finished with 20 digs, while Cornish tallied 18 digs and eight kills.

5245Jessica Reynolds and Robyn Carroll were named to the USCAA All-Tournament Team for their tremendous performances on the court during the 2014 Championships. This caps a remarkable season for the Roos as their third place finish out of 10 teams is the best in USCAA Championship history for SUNY Canton.
