Special Teams Key Roos to Dominating 6-2 Win at Suffolk

Boston, MA – The SUNY Canton men's hockey team used four straight scores over the final 34 minutes of play to cruise past host Suffolk University, 6-2, on Saturday evening.

Senior Cory Giczewski (Fountain Valley, CA) paced the Roos (3-11-1) with two goals and two assists, while junior J.R. Lafferty (Williamstown, NJ) dished out three assists. Austin Root (Manhattan Beach, CA) and Lee Melde (Proctor, MN) had a goal and assist each as eight different SUNY Canton players tallied a point in the win.

J.R. Lafferty assisted three goals on the night.
Kristian Leach (Indianapolis, IN) got the scoring started at the 2:29 mark of the first when he beat Ram goaltender Brett Roman with the skater advantage for his fifth goal of the season. Lafferty and Giczewski earned helpers on the play. After a Suffolk interference penalty the Roo power play unit went to work again as just 30 seconds into the power play Dave Schneider (Indianapolis, IN) lit the lamp as Lafferty and Giczweski once again registered assists.

Suffolk (5-8-1) trimmed the deficit to one at the 6:15 mark when Dan Mazzei netted his fifth of the season off passes from Jon Stauffer and Carmen Mastrangelo. Roo net minder Morgan Barr (Almonte, ON) made 14 first period saves as SUNY Canton led 2-1 after one.

The Rams knotted the game at two just over midway through the second stanza on Stanton Turner's third of the season. Little more than two minutes later Melde earned his fourth tally of the season on what would be the eventual game-winner off the set-up from Root. The Roos led 3-2 after the second.

SUNY Canton came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders as they produced three third period scores.
Cory Giczewski had 2 goals and 2 assists on Saturday.
Giczewski beat the goaltender for the seventh time on the season at the 4:07 mark as Zach Paisley (Yonkers, NY) fed him for the goal. Less than two minutes later Root provided the knockout punch with his third of the season to make it 5-2. Melde and Justin Brooks were credited with assists on the play.

With 5:32 to play Giczewski continued his dominance netting his team-leading eighth marker of the season, his third point of the night coming with the skater advantage. Lafferty tallied his third assist in the game and seventh of the season on the play. The Roos dominated special teams on the evening going 3-for-5 on the power play, while the Rams were 1-for-7 with the extra skater.

Barr was impressive throughout turning aside 38 of the 40 shots he faced. Roman made 29 saves for Suffolk. The Roos return to action Sunday at 4:40 p.m. when they visit Curry College.
