Box Score (Clinton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton baseball team held off a late charge by Hamilton College to earn an 8-7 win Thursday afternoon in Clinton, N.Y.
The Roos, playing their seventh game in the last five days, improved to 10-19 while the Continentals dropped to 13-19.
SUNY Canton built a 3-0 lead after 3 ½ innings, but Hamilton answered with two runs in the bottom of the third to trim the lead to a one-run affair. The Roos got one back in the top of the fourth off a Hamilton error and led 4-2, before the Continentals posted two runs in the bottom half of the inning to even the game 4-4.
Junior
Jordan Hunneyman (Redwood, N.Y.) broke the tie leading off the top of the fifth with his first home run of the year, a solo shot to centerfield. Freshman
Eddy Morel (Lake Worth, Fla.) followed with an RBI-single and the Roos again had a two-run lead.
Hamilton countered with a single run in the bottom of the inning to pull within one. Both teams played scoreless sixth and seventh innings, before SUNY Canton extended their lead with two runs in the top of the eighth. Morel knocked in his second RBI with a single, and freshman
Kevin Hill (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) followed with a run-scoring single of his own to centerfield to give the Roos an 8-5 advantage heading into the final frame.
Hamilton scored two runs on two singles in the bottom of the ninth to close the gap to one run, and then put runners on second and third after a couple of SUNY Canton miscues. But senior
Zach Rosenthal (Miami, Fla.) struck out the final Hamilton batter swinging to end the threat and secure the win for the Roos.
Hunneyman finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Senior
Gerardo Torres (Theresa, N.Y.) doubled and scored. Freshman
Braden Giffin (Lake Worth, Fla.) added three singles, an RBI and a run.
Junior Bryce Macdonald-Wilson (Gastein Passage, Nova Scotia) notched his first win at SUNY Canton striking out seven batters while surrendering 11 hits in six innings. Macdonald-Wilson came on in relief of starter
Tyler Thomas (Canton, N.Y.), who had one strikeout and gave up two hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings. Rosenthal got the save with that one strikeout in the ninth inning.
Sam Fuentes doubled twice and drove in two runs for Hamilton, who sent four pitchers to the mound.
SUNY Canton returns home this Saturday with a twinbill against St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn starting at 12 p.m. in Canton.
