Box Score 2 (Lakeland, Fla.)- The SUNY Canton baseball team opened their 2013 spring campaign on Saturday against Hillsdale College in Lakeland, Fla., and the Chargers prevailed in the doubleheader 6-5 and 13-7.
In the opening game, the Roos built a 3-0 lead after posting three runs in the third inning. Junior
Nick Belile (Norwood, N.Y.) led off with a walk and then stole second. Freshman Eddie Morel (Lake Worth, Fla.) followed suit with a walk and a steal, and then both players were brought home by a two-run triple from senior
Gerardo Torres (Theresa, N.Y.).
Hillsdale trimmed the lead to 3-1 with a single run in the fourth inning, and then surged ahead with a three-run fifth inning. The Charges stretched their lead to 6-3 scoring two more runs in the top of the seventh.
In the bottom half of the seventh inning, SUNY Canton rallied back with a pair of runs to pull within one. Morel singled to start the inning and then sophomore
Luis Ramirez (Puerto Rico) walked and Torres advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Junior
Jordan Hunneyman (Redwood, N.Y.) plated Morel with an RBI groundout, and freshman
Kyle Sacks (Clifton Park, N.Y.) brought Ramirez home with an RBI-single. The Crusaders hung on for the win getting the final SUNY Canton batter to ground out to end the game.
Sophomore
Chris Jones (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) added two singles and two runs for the Roos. Sophomore
John Mancini (Scotia, N.Y.) allowed three runs on six hits in 2 2/3 innings. Junior
Alex LaFountain (Keesville, N.Y.) gave up one walk in 1 2/3 innings, and junior
Bryce MacDonald-Wilson (Gasten Passage, Novia Scotia) surrendered one run on hit in 2/3 innings.
Mike Vanchieri stroked a triple and drove in two runs to lead Hillsdale, and Lincoln Reed added a double and two RBIs.
In the second game, Morel smacked a pair of doubles and drove in two runs. Junior
Phil Tsiaras (Toronto, Ontario) went 2-for-3 with a double and a run batted in, and freshman Braden Giffen (Lake Worth, Fla.) added two singles and two RBIs.
The Roos return to the diamond on Sunday with a single game against Gwynedd-Mercy College (Pa.) at 11 a.m.
