Albany, NY – The SUNY Canton men's basketball team played a strong game on the road but fell on a banked in three-point shot at the buzzer, 94-93, to host Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in double overtime Saturday evening. The win improves the Panthers to 4-4, while the Roos fall to 0-7.
Sam Annorh (Queens, NY) paced the Roos with 27 points and nine assists, while
Khalil Bratton (Queens, NY) tallied a double-double on 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Khalid Vaughn (New York, NY) finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and six steals and
Scott Bartenstein (Potsdam, NY) added 15 in the scoring column.
Casey Redfern finished with game-highs of 35 points and 13 rebounds including the game-winning shot. John Tremblay and Ryan McVaigh each pumped in 17 points apiece for Albany, while McVaigh also had 12 rebounds.
SUNY Canton scored the games first four points and held a six-point lead with 1:07 left in the first half, the largest lead for either team in the opening 20 minutes. The Panthers closed the half on a 5-0 run as the Roos led 35-34 at intermission.
The Roos opened up a nine-point lead at 60-51 with 11:40 left in regulation. The game saw four ties in the final five minutes of regulation and Albany led by three with just 20 seconds remaining. Bratton came up huge hitting a trey with just 13 seconds left as the SUNY Canton defense held, sending the game to overtime.
SUNY Canton took control as Annorh scored the first eight points of the first extra period on a lay-in and two long balls to give the Roos an 86-78 lead. The visitors led 87-79 but it was the hosts who closed the first overtime on a 9-1 run over the final 2:14. Redfern hit a jumper with just four seconds left to send the contest into a second overtime.
The Roos led the entire second overtime until Redfern's winner as time expired. SUNY Canton held a 27-10 edge in bench points and 16-10 advantage in fast break points, while outscoring the Panthers 42-34 in the paint.
