Canton, NY – Sam Annorh (Queens, NY) pumped in a game-high 19 points including an 11-for-11 mark from the charity stripe to lead four players in double figures in an 81-70 loss to host St. Lawrence University Saturday afternoon at Burkman Gymnasium.
The Saints (3-5) opened the game on a 17-0 run using five three pointers as they were 7-for-14 from long distance in the opening half. SUNY Canton (0-8) struggled from the field early, but closed the half on a 7-1 run that included two hoops in the paint from
Khalil Bratton (Queens, NY) and a trey from
Scott Bartenstein (Potsdam, NY).
A strong close to the half got the Roos within 11 at 36-25 at intermission. Bratton, who completed a tough lay-in just before the halftime buzzer, led the visitors with seven points in the opening stanza.
Both teams played a faster pace and shot the ball better in the second half. The Saints shot 56 percent from the floor after halftime, while the Roos hit on 48 percent of their field goal attempts and were a perfect 14-for-14 from the free throw line in the final 20 minutes. Annorh had a huge second half scoring 17 points after the break, while
Rashad Richardson (Rochester, NY) was 5-for-7 from the field in the second half for 10 points.
Annorh, who was a perfect 11-for-11 at the line, made four straight to bring SUNY Canton within eight at 58-50 with 9:14 to go. After the Saints turned the ball over, the Roos had a chance to make it a five-point game, but
Tom Coloney's (Harrisville, NY) three just missed.
The Saints responded with back-to-back lay-ups from Edwards and Kyle Kobis to open the lead back up to 11 at 64-53. The Roos pushed back within eight at 64-56 after an old fashioned three-point play from Annorh. That was as close as the Roos would get as St. Lawrence converted its free throws down the stretch for the 81-70 victory.
The Roos held slight advantages in points in the paint (28-24) and bench points (17-14), while St. Lawrence used a 36-33 edge on the glass to control second chance points, 13-4. Annorh led all scorers with 19 points in the game, while
Romario Fletcher (Queens, NY) and Richardson added 12 points apiece. Bartenstein chipped in with 10 points.
