Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton men's ice hockey team played a well-rounded game sparked by a remarkable 36 saves from junior netminder Morgan Barr (Almonte, ON) as they tied the visiting University of New England Friday evening in the season-opener for both teams. The Roos had two near misses in the five minute overtime session as they nearly earned the win but settled for the 2-2 tie.
 
The visitors opened up the scoring 8:54 into the first period as Zeth Zielinski assisted a Zach Lokey power play marker to make it 1-0. The Roos responded less than five minutes later when Kristian Leach (Indianapolis, IN) fed the puck to Dave Schneider (Indianapolis, IN) who beat Nor'Easter netminder Colby Drost to even the contest at 1-1. The visitors held a 13-8 shots on goal edge as the teams went to the locker rooms knotted at one.
 
Both squad tallied scores in the second stanza. Austin Root (Manhattan Beach, CA) put the Roos ahead when he caused a turnover in the New England defensive zone and lit the lamp for the 2-1 lead. Two minutes later Ryan Quinn lit the lamp of assists from Chris Harlow and Ben Pearl. The teams went to second intermission tied at two.
 
Neither team was able to pull ahead in the third frame as the squads combined for 15 shots on net. Joe Casale (Niagara Falls, NY) rattled a shot off the crossbar with just more than seven minutes left in regulation. The Roos had the only shots on goal in the overtime period as they had great looks for the game-winner.
 
SUNY Canton is back in action Saturday when it travels to Lake Placid, NY to square off with Skidmore College at 8:00 p.m. at the Herb Brooks Ice Arena.
