Women's Basketball Knocks Off Fort Kent 60-55

(Potsdam, N.Y.)- Brittany Kenyon (Hammond, N.Y.) sank a pair of free throws with time winding down helping the SUNY Canton women's basketball team hand the University of Maine at Fort Kent their first Sunrise Conference loss with a 60-55 win in Potsdam.  The Roos improved to 7-2 in the conference and 10-10 overall while the Bengals finished the regular season at 11-1 and 16-8 overall.

Keynon sank four free throws in the final 1:07 of the second half to hold off the Bengals and SUNY Canton was able to shake off a slow start after halftime and some key baskets from the Bengals' Talisha Herring down the stretch.

The Roos took a 28-15 lead into halftime after starting the game on a 12-1 run and holding Fort Kent to just 3-for-27 shooting (11 percent).  SUNY Canton shot 52 percent in the first half and hit 3 of 4 3-pointers compared to just 1 of 9 for Fort Kent.

The second half was a different story as the13-point lead was quickly erased by a 15-0 run over the first four and half minutes by the Bengals that saw them climb ahead 30-28.

Jackie Sedlacek (Endicott, N.Y.) scored on a layup at the 14:50 mark to stop the run and the Roos were then able to shake off the rough start and battle back.  Heather Lottie (Canton, N.Y.) scored on back-to-back baskets a minute later and SUNY Canton had regained the lead 34-32.

Fort Kent scored on their next possession but then Kenyon drilled a 3-pointer that put the Roos ahead for good 37-36.

But Fort Kent didn't go away.  After Shannon LaFave (Ogdensburg, N.Y. ) hit back-to-back jumpers for a 54-47 lead, Herring sank a 3-pointer and scored on a layup to pull Fort Kent within six points with 2:17 left.  Herring hit another three following a pair of free throws from Kenyon and the lead was down to three.  Kenyon's final two free throws came with 20 seconds left and the Bengals misfired on several shots in the waning seconds.

Kenyon finished with a team-high 17 points and six rebounds.  LaFave added 12 points and five boards.  Sedlacek chipped in with 13 points and Lottie had eight.

Herring ended the day with 16 points and three assists.  Kristen Violette notched a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
