Canton, NY – Markel Mosley, Anthony Ruggiero and Andrew Rine all contributed to the scoreboard on Sunday afternoon as the SUNY Canton men's soccer team shutout VTSU Castleton.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Mosley put Canton on the board midway through the first half, using his head to put the ball in the back of the net off a perfectly placed corner kick by Winnie Simpson.
• The second goal of the game came 17 minutes into the second half off the left foot of Ruggerio, who teed up a shot at the top left of the 18-yard box that screamed past the goalkeeper. Demetrius Blake, Jr. provided the assist as he slid the ball laterally to Ruggiero at the top of the box.
• The Roos stood firm defensively, keeping the Spartans off the scoreboard as the last moments of the match wound down. Canton took advantage of a goalkeeping error as the final seconds ticked away, as Rine tapped the ball into a wide-open net. Jonny LaFontaine earned the assist on the insurance score.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

• The team's 3-0 win marks their largest margin of victory since they defeated VTSU Johnson, 7-2, on Sept. 21, 2024.
• Ruggiero and Rine's goals were both career-firsts for the freshman pair.
• Braydn Bovee recorded two saves en route to his first career shutout.
• The Roos tallied six shots on goal to Castleton's two. The Spartans had the edge in corner kicks with six to Canton's three, while both squads totaled nine fouls.

The Roos will be back in action at home on Wednesday, September 23 at 6 p.m. when they welcome Clarkson to town.
