Terry Martin Inducted into New York State Hockey Hall of Fame July 12

Canton, NY – Former SUNY Canton Men's Hockey Coach Terry Martin of Morristown was inducted into the New York State Hockey Hall of Fame on Sunday, July 12, 2026. The induction ceremony took place at the Hilton Hotel in Troy, NY.

Martin coached hockey at the college from 1974 to 1999, where he amassed a remarkable 527-211-29 record, including a 102-11-8 mark in his final four seasons. His historic coaching career saw him lead Canton to 12 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Championships. SUNY Canton named its hockey rink the Terry Martin Arena in a naming ceremony on November 16, 2024.

"He taught decades of hockey players how to be successful, not only on the ice but in the classroom and beyond," SUNY Canton President Dr. Zvi Szafran said during the naming ceremony.

Martin's players' descriptions of their coach's support and guidance during his coaching career are ubiquitous, with many alumni referring to Terry as a father figure or a member of their family.

SUNY Canton previously honored Martin with a statue outside of the school's Convocation Recreation and Athletic Center (CARC) in November 2013. Martin was inducted into the inaugural SUNY Canton Hall of Fame class in the summer of 2011.

Martin also served as men's athletic director, women's soccer coach, men's lacrosse coach, and taught in the physical education department during his time at the College. He was the 2009 recipient of the American Hockey Coaches Association's prestigious John "Snooks" Kelley Founders Award, recognizing the impact he had on the collegiate sport.
