Oswego, NY – AJ Campi had a SUNY Canton-career-high four hits,
Chris McLean tripled and drove in three, but the SUNY Canton baseball team dropped a competitive back-and-forth contest to the Oswego Lakers by a score of 6-4 Monday afternoon.
THE BASICS
- Result: Oswego 6, SUNY Canton 4
- Location: Laker Baseball Field – Oswego, NY
- Records: SUNY Canton (7-10, 0-3 SUNYAC) | Oswego (9-10, 5-1 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Oswego cashed in two runs in the bottom of the first with a pair of free passes, a single, an RBI sacrifice bunt.
- With one out in the third, Zack Baiani walked, Campi singled, and then McLean tripled out to left field to tie the game. Sal Diaz followed McLean up with a sacrifice fly to plate the third run of the inning as the Roos claimed the lead at 3-2.
- However, the Lakers got this run right back in the fourth with two singles, a double, then a sacrifice fly in the inning to score two runs and get out ahead 4-3.
- SUNY Canton tied it up though in the top of the fifth. Baiani and Campi laced back-to-back singles, then McLean sent Baiani home with a run-scoring fielder's choice groundball.
- The thrilling game continued into the bottom of the seventh. Oswego had a runner on third with one out, but a very well executed safety squeeze play scored the run without even a play at home and the Lakers took a 5-4 advantage.
- Oswego added an insurance run in the eighth as the Roos trailed by a pair heading into their final at bats.
- The Roos had baserunners late in the game but could not string multiple hits together in any inning. SUNY Canton went down 1-2-3 in the ninth to fall in the series finale.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Campi's four hits are the most he has ever had as a Kangaroo since joining the team from Wells following the 2024 season. McLean tallied three RBIs, while Diaz plated one with a sacrifice fly.
- Freshman Ben Feil battled through six innings, allowing four earned runs, five hits, and striking out seven in the no-decision. Maxwell Rose pitched the final two innings, allowing one earned run and holding the Lakers hitless.
- Nobody on Oswego had more than one hit in the game, and Thomas Harrington had the only extra base hit. The bullpen was the key to victory with Owen Hoyt pitching three shutout innings for the win and Matthew Drillings earning the save with a three-up, three-down ninth.
- SUNY Canton outhit Oswego 10-5, committed fewer errors (4-3), and struckout only once in the contest compared to the Lakers eight.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos will be right back at it tomorrow, March 31 at St. Lawrence for a single game at 3:30 p.m.
