Paone Smacks Four Hits, Homers in Twin Bill vs. Oswego

Cortland, NY – Jared Paone was 4-for-6 over the course of two games, which included the freshman hitting his second-career home run, but the SUNY Canton baseball team was downed in both games of a doubleheader against the Oswego State Lakers Sunday at Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex.

A big first inning in game one pushed the Lakers to a 6-2 victory. In game two, Oswego had two blowup innings and hit a grand slam to win 13-9 despite a late-game comeback effort from SUNY Canton.

THE BASICS
  • Results: Game 1: Oswego 6, SUNY Canton 2 | Game 2: Oswego 13, SUNY Canton 9
  • Location: Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex – Cortland, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (7-9, 0-2 SUNYAC) | Oswego (8-10, 4-1 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • The Roos made it 2-0 after the first half-inning. Chris McLean doubled down the line, and then Paone drove him in with a base hit up the middle. Later in the frame with the bases loaded, Mark Maybee Jr. beat out a slow roller to third base for an infield single to score the second run.
  • However, the Lakers put on a crooked number in the bottom of the first, plating five runs on five hits and the Roos had themselves a hole to dig out of down 5-2 after one.
  • Three base hits in the bottom of the second inning gave Oswego a 6-2 advantage.
  • SUNY Canton had two in scoring position in the third inning but failed to score. In the fifth inning, both Sal Diaz and Derek Maldonaldo were aboard to begin the frame, but a doubleplay erased the threat and the Roos came away empty-handed again.
  • Jonathan Guerrero pitched nicely after the first two innings, holding the score where it was by tossing the third through sixth scoreless, allowing just a couple hits in that span with no legitimate threats. The California native finished with six plus innings and five strikeouts.
  • Still down 6-2 in the ninth, the Roos did not get an runs and were shut down 1-2-3 in the final inning.
  • Paone and Maybee Jr. shared the two RBIs for SUNY Canton.
  • Karter Kenniston had another nice relief appearance following Guerrero. The local native from Tupper Lake pitched two shutout innings with just one hit.

GAME 2 – BOX SCORE

  • The Roos had another nice first inning in game two. McLean scored on a failed pickoff attempt resulting in an error, Korbin Lovejoy plated a run with a double out to the right-center wall, and Maybee Jr. sent another bounding for home with a single to put the Roos up 3-0.
  • In the bottom of the second, the Lakers loaded the bases, then a hit-by-pitch sent one home, and this was followed by a grand slam to shift the game in favor of Oswego as they now had a 5-3 lead.
  • After the three-run first, the SUNY Canton bats were stagnant for a while, but the Roos got one back in the top of the sixth. McLean laced a double down the line, then Diaz and Paone were both drilled. Lovejoy then had another RBI with a deep sacrifice fly to make it 5-4.
  • Although, the bottom of the sixth was an offensive outburst by the Lakers. A two-run homer was hit shortly into the inning and that was only the beginning of the party too. Several extra base hits after that led to a seven-run inning as Oswego went up 12-4.
  • Down 13-4 with just a couple of innings left, the eighth inning began with McLean getting plunked, and Diaz joining him on the bases with a base hit. Then Paone blasted a rocket out and over the left field wall for a three-run home run and the Roos trimmed the deficit to 13-7.
  • Still needing a big number in the top of the ninth, two free passes were granted with Georgios Sakellis and Zack Baiani reaching. An errant throw on a slow roller by Campi plated two unearned runs, but that was all the Roos could muster in their 13-9 defeat.
  • Paone was 3-for-4 with a homer, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Both Campi and Phillips Jr. had a couple of hits as well.
  • Lovejoy and McLean both doubled in the loss with Lovejoy registering a pair of RBIs, and McLean scored three times.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos will cap off the series against the Lakers tomorrow, March 30. The game will shift back to Oswego's campus and begin at 1 p.m.
