Oneonta, NY – Sophomore forward
Kat McRobbie-Taru had 20 points and 10 rebounds and strong defense from the SUNY Canton women's basketball team propelled the Roos to a 58-50 win over the Oneonta Red Dragons Tuesday afternoon.
THE BASICS
- Result: SUNY Canton 58, Oneonta 50
- Location: Dewar Arena – Oneonta, NY
- Records: SUNY Canton (9-1, 1-1 SUNYAC) | Oneonta (5-4, 0-2 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Oneonta scored the first three, the Roos got after it on defense and started to get going on offense. Hope Aniceto hit back-to-back three pointers, and the Roos were ahead 10-3 at the first media timeout.
- The Red Dragons made it tight again with a 9-0 run, but McRobbie-Taru made a nice post move for a bucket, and Emma Perez connected with Kate Grainger for a backdoor layup right before the horn and the Roos ended the first 10 minutes ahead 17-12.
- The second quarter was a challenge for SUNY Canton, particularly on the offensive end. Only one field goal dropped in for the Roos, that being Aniceto's third three of the game with 7:03 left to play. Oneonta took a lead with 5:47 left in the first half, but the Roos defense kept the game within reach.
- SUNY Canton did get to the free throw line fairly efficiently and went 6-for-8 from the charity stripe as part of their nine points scored in the quarter. Oneonta was ahead 29-26 at the end of the first half with both teams shooting well under 30%. McRobbie-Taru led SUNY Canton with 10 points at the break.
- Out of the locker room, Aniceto hit another three, and this started a stretch of the Roos scoring 13 of the first 15 points of the third quarter as SUNY Canton went out ahead 39-31 four minutes into the quarter.
- However, another cold spell ensued from the visitors, and the Roos missed their final eight shots of the third. However, the Red Dragons were not much better as they were only 2-for-12 in the quarter. SUNY Canton never lost their lead and were out in front 40-37 with 10 minutes left to play.
- The Roos got their offense going again in the fourth quarter with 6-for-10 shooting to begin with and Grainger and McRobbie-Taru combining for nine points. SUNY Canton went out in front 55-47 with 3:45 left to play.
- Later, McRobbie-Taru hit a dagger three for her 20th point and a 58-47 SUNY Canton advantage with 2:31 left as the Roos went on to achieve a 58-50 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- McRobbie Taru, with her 20-10 game, was not the only Roo with a double-double as Grainger scored 11 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and dished out four assists as well.
- Aniceto recorded 15 points in the victory and the floor general, Sierra Pabo, added seven points and four rebounds.
- Oneonta had three different players score 11 points while Megan Desrats was just shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
- Neither side shot particularly great with SUNY Canton at 32% (19-60) and the Red Dragons at 26% (16-61). Rebounding was 45 on each end and assists were virtually the same with the Roos at seven and Oneonta at six.
