Pabo Eclipses 1,000 Career Point Mark vs. Hawks

Canton, NY – Junior Sierra Pabo scored a team-high 13 points as she surpassed the 1,000 career point mark, but a strong second half carried visiting New Paltz to an 83-62 SUNYAC win against the SUNY Canton women's basketball team on Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • New Paltz opened the game on a 6-0 run in the first two minutes of the game behind four points from Brianna Fitzgerald. Kat McRobbie-Taru and Hope Aniceto scored buckets inside to get Canton within 8-4 at the first media timeout.
  • The Roos got within 10-9 after a driving layup from Pabo but the Hawks ended the final 2:50 of the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 16-9 lead after 10 minutes of action.
  • A pair of Fitzgerald free throws extended the New Paltz lead to nine (18-9) early in the second quarter. The Hawks opened a 29-17 advantage after a Sierra Carter three-pointer midway through the quarter, the largest lead for either team in the first half.
  • The Roos stormed back using an 11-0 run to get within 29-28 after a Natalie Bush trifecta with 1:34 to play. The Hawks closed the half on a 5-0 run to lead 34-28 at intermission.
  • McRobbie-Taru paced Canton with eight first-half points, while Pabo had seven. Fitzgerald led the Hawks with 10 in the scoring column.  
  • New Paltz opened the second half on an 8-2 run to open a double-digit advantage at 42-30 just over two minutes into the second half. The Roos responded with a driving layup from Pabo and a three from Kate Grainger to get within 42-35 with 6:55 left in the third quarter. The Hawks extended their lead to as many as 13 and led 55-44 after three quarters.
  • That was as close as the Roos would get as New Paltz outscored the hosts 28-18 in the fourth quarter en route to the win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Pabo led the Roos with 13 points, five steals and three assists. McRobbie-Taru added 10 points and four rebounds, while Aniceto had nine points. Abigail Rice chipped in eight points and five rebounds, while Alyvia Roberts added seven points. Rice's eight points were a career-high, while Roberts tied her season-high with seven.
  • Karly Wittenbauer paced four Hawks in double figures with 22 points, eight rebounds and six steals. Hannah Vanderzee added 19 points, while Fitzgerald recorded a double-double on 14 points and 10 boards. Carter also reached double figures with 12.
 
RECORD NIGHT
  • With her first made free throw and 12th point of the game with 2:15 left in the third quarter Pabo eclipsed the 1,000 career scoring mark. She becomes just the third player in D-III era program history to accomplish the feat with all 1,000 points at SUNY Canton joining teammate Hope Aniceto and Karyss Terrance '16. Shannon LaFave '11 also scored 1,000 points all at Canton prior to the Roos moving to Division III.
  • Pabo also eclipsed the 400 career made field goal mark and has 401 career makes, which ranks first in D-III era program history. Aniceto sits second with 368 career made field goals, while Terrance is third (362).
