Roos Erase 13-Point Second Half Deficit, Stun Oswego on the Road

Oswego, NY – In a rough first half where the Roos were down double-digits most of the way and trailed by as much as 13 in the second half, the SUNY Canton women's basketball team mounted a furious comeback to stun the Oswego State Lakers 59-57 down on the Lake Ontario coast Friday night.

THE BASICS
  • Result: SUNY Canton 59, Oswego 57
  • Location: Max Ziel Gymnasium – Oswego, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (12-2, 4-2 SUNYAC) | Oswego (5-8, 3-4 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In a game of runs early, it started 4-0 Lakers, then 6-4 Roos, and 13-6 Lakers before head coach Chris Klassen was forced to call a timeout with 3:28 left to play.
  • The rest of the quarter the Lakers still scored extremely efficiently and got stops down at the other end, finishing the quarter ahead 19-6.
  • Sierra Pabo scored a bucket to get the SUNY Canton offense going in the second quarter with the Roos outscoring the Lakers 7-5 by the first media timeout as the Roos won the quarter by three points.
  • Natalie Bush hit a jumper towards the end of the half, but the Roos still trailed 31-21 at the break. Kat McRobbie-Taru led the way with six points.
  • SUNY Canton fell behind even more, down 38-25 to begin the second half, but Emma Diehl knocked down a three, then Pabo commanded an 11-2 run to wake up the offense and get the Roos down just 45-44 at the end of the quarter.
  • Pabo had eight points in the quarter and Oswego struggled with 5-for-19 shooting as the contest headed into the final stanza nearly even.
  • After some even play a little bit after, Kate Grainger tied the game at 51, then a technical foul gave the Roos some free shots from the charity stripe and SUNY Canton pulled ahead 52-51 for their first lead since 4:49 left in the first quarter.
  • The Lakers got their lead back up to 57-54 with three minutes left, but McRobbie-Taru scored four straight and SUNY Canton went out ahead 58-57 with 1:50 left.
  • Still ahead by one, the Roos had the ball with 35 seconds left and McRobbie-Taru was forced to take a shot at five seconds remaining with the shot clock winding down. The shot was off, but Grainger pulled down a clutch offensive rebound, forcing Oswego to foul.
  • Grainger made one of two foul shots as the Lakers called timeout to advance the ball into the Roos defensive end with the score at 59-57 with 2.9 seconds left.
  • On the final play of the game, the Lakers got a very good look by Semaiah Williams who was wide open around the right elbow, but the shot was way off, and the clock expired with SUNY Canton mounting the comeback win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Both Pabo and McRobbie-Taru had 15-point nights with Pabo also leading the Roos with four helpers.
  • Grainger was responsible for 12 points and nine rebounds and has now scored at least 10 points in all but one of her games this season.
  • Bri Weaver was the leading scorer for Oswego despite playing for just 17 minutes. Zhane Holmes had 10 points, and Giavanna White-Principio had 16 rebounds.
  • Both teams were at 32% shooting from the field, and three-point shooting was rough for both sides with the Roos going 5-for-21 and Oswego at 4-for-20. There were not many turnovers or fouls in the game, but SUNY Canton made the most of their trips to the line, going 12-for-14 while the Lakers made just five of nine.
