New Paltz, NY – Sierra Pabo notched 11 points, but the SUNY Canton offense all together was held in check by the New Paltz Hawks as the Roos were upended 66-44 in SUNYAC women's basketball Tuesday night.
THE BASICS
- Result: New Paltz 66, SUNY Canton 44
- Location: Hawk Center – New Paltz, NY
- Records: SUNY Canton (11-2, 4-2 SUNYAC) | New Paltz (10-2, 4-1 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a cold shooting start on both ends, the two teams started to find their footing offensively. The Roos held a 9-5 lead at the first media timeout with Kat McRobbie-Taru claiming four points early on.
- SUNY Canton went on to get threes from Sierra Pabo and Hope Aniceto, but it was all Hawks the rest of the way as they scored 16 points in the final five minutes, ending the quarter ahead 21-15.
- The New Paltz defense continued to be bothersome in the second quarter, and the hosts offense was electric as well. Ball movement and dribble penetration led to open looks and the Hawks had a 28-17 lead with 5:12 remaining in the first half.
- Late in the quarter, Alyvia Roberts had a reverse layup and drew a foul, finishing off a three-point play with a free throw, but the Roos still had an uphill battle in the second half, trailing 35-24 after two quarters. Pabo paced the squad with eight points at the break.
- Offense was not exactly high flying to begin the second half, with the two teams combining to go 2-for-18 to commence the third quarter.
- Grace Villnave buried a pair of free throws and Pabo got hacked and went 1-for-2 at the stripe, but the New Paltz lead was never within single digits. A half court shot drilled at the buzzer by the Hawks gave them a 48-33 edge heading into the final 10 minutes.
- Abigail Rice scored just a few seconds into the quarter, but the Hawks then scored nine straight, taking a 57-35 advantage with seven minutes left to play.
- Roberts had a couple buckets late to cap off a solid 3-for-6 day from the field, however, the Roos dropped the contest 66-44.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Pabo was the only Roo to eclipse double figures with 11 points. Roberts scored seven for a career-best for the local freshmen out of Malone.
- Emma Diehl did some serious damage on the glass, outhustling all players on the court with a career-best 11 rebounds in just 22 minutes. The sophomore also picked up a steal plus two blocks.
- New Paltz was led by Karly Wittenburg who had 18 points to lead all scorers. Hannah Vanderzee was perhaps the best player on the court with 12 points, 14 boards, six assists, and five steals.
- The Hawks shot 39% (24-61) while the Roos struggled at 22% (15-67). SUNY Canton also committed 20 turnovers and only had five assists in contrast to New Paltz's 14.
