Brimelow and Mosley Net Goals in Roos Home Win over Wildcats

Canton, NY – Despite falling behind 1-0 early, the SUNY Canton men's soccer team got a goal from Markel Mosley, then what proved to be the game-winning goal by Hayden Brimelow with five minutes left in the first half to give the Roos a 2-1 victory over the SUNY Poly Wildcats in their first win of the 2025 season Tuesday evening in Canton.

THE BASICS
  • Result: SUNY Canton 2, SUNY Poly 1
  • Location: SUNY Canton Turf Field – Canton, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (1-2-0) | SUNY Poly (1-2-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mosley had a chance two minutes in where the sophomore had an open look just outside the 18-yard-box that narrowly missed out left.
  • Not long after, just 3:20 into the game, SUNY Poly crossed a ball from the right corner towards the far post, resulting in a wide-open Wildcat for a goal and a 1-0 lead by the visitors.
  • At the 11-minute marker, the Roos responded after Demetrius Blake Jr. crossed the ball into the box from the left side, then Mosley kicked it in on the run beating Wildcat goalie Tyler Barth top right for a 1-1 game.
  • In the late stages of the first half, with just over five minutes left, Barth was whistled for a handball right outside the top of the 18-yard-box, giving the Roos a free kick. Brimelow took the kick and didn't even need any help as the senior placed it perfectly into the top left corner as the Roos took a 2-1 lead.
  • Into the half, SUNY Canton still held onto their one-goal lead, also outshooting the Wildcats 6-2 with SUNY Poly getting just one shot on goal while the Roos had four.
  • At 49', SUNY Poly's Eric Bethmann had a couple great looks with two bicycle kicks in quick succession, the first of which hit the top of the crossbar and went back in play, the second one coming just nine seconds later which went just high of the net.
  • Ball possession was in favor of the Roos throughout the middle section of the second half with SUNY Canton getting six unanswered shots on net, including a couple good looks from Blake Jr. that went just wide.
  • The Wildcats went nearly 38 straight minutes without a shot attempt but finally got one 87 minutes in off a free kick and a header right in front of the net that goalkeeper Jason Vela made a save on.
  • Most of the final three minutes were played in the Wildcats end of the field and the buzzer sounded with the ball in the hands of Barth for the first Roos win of the fall.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • SUNY Canton won just about every aspect of the game, including overall shots (14-5), shots on goal (7-2), and corner kicks (4-2).
  • Brimelow had three total shots in the game, all of which were on goal, while Mosley had six total shots with two on net. Blake Jr. registered two shots on goal in addition to his assist on Mosley's goal.
