HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first 25 minutes of the first half, each team had similar times of possession but both sides had few scoring attempts. The Blue Devils had two shots that both missed the net while David Bermeo and Hayden Brimelow each had off-target shots.
- In the 26th minute, Fredonia had a corner kick that the Roos headed out to the opposite corner for Kyto Magee. Magee then crossed it, and Tomas Thordarson headed it in for the game's first goal.
- The Roos best chance of the game came with seven minutes left in the first half with a long ball intended for Chris Escobar just inside the 18-yard box. A communication issue between a defender and the Blue Devils' Thomas McDonald ensued, and McDonald dove at the last second but missed the ball. However, a couple Fredonia defenders hustled back, and Escobar could not get past them as they booted it out to midfield to stave off the Roos.
- The Blue Devils' second goal came in the 44th minute after a fastbreak chance led to Carson Teijeria beating his defender 1v1, who then snuck the ball under Bovair as Fredonia led by a pair.
- The Blue Devils took their 2-0 lead into halftime, also leading in shots 5-3 and corner kicks 3-0.
- SUNY Canton could not turn the tide in the second half after a penalty kick goal from Fredrick Butler in the 49th minute followed by a goal by Ryan Ameis less than three minutes later blew it open 4-0.
- The Roos had very few scoring opportunities in the game against the stingy Fredonia defense. The Roos' only shot on net the entire game came from Demetrius Blake Jr. in the 69th minute; it was well outside the 18-yard-box and a fairly routine save for McDonald.
- The Blue Devils scored one final time with a little over 10 minutes left to play, ending their trip to the North Country with a 5-0 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Blake Jr. had the only shot on goal for the Roos, coming midway through the second half. Escobar, Brimelow, and Bermeo had the other three looks for SUNY Canton.
- All five goals for the Blue Devils were scored by different players. 11 players had shots in the game, and Tomas Thordarson and Fredrick Butler led the way with each recording a goal and an assist.
- Fredonia bested SUNY Canton in shots (14-4), shots on net (8-1), and corner kicks (8-0).
- McDonald earned his shutout by making only one save, while Bovair for the Roos made three saves on the day.
