Bovair’s Six-Save Night Not Quite Enough in One-Goal Loss to Oswego

Canton, NY – Senior goalkeeper Jon Bovair made his third consecutive start and stopped six shots, but the SUNY Canton men's soccer team fell just short after a late goal from the Oswego State Lakers handed the Roos a 1-0 defeat Wednesday night.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Oswego State 1, SUNY Canton 0
  • Location: SUNY Canton Turf Field – Canton, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (2-9-1, 0-2-0 SUNYAC) | Oswego State (2-4-3, 1-1-0 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lakers looked good early and got a couple back-to-back shots right around the net eight minutes in. After these shots, an Oswego player was whistled for offsides in the resulting scramble just moments before the Lakers had a wide open look on net.
  • Bovair and the Roos faced a plethora of shots early in the game with the Lakers outshooting SUNY Canton 8-1 to begin the first half.
  • In the 24th minute, Chris Escobar had a far, but wide-open look from about 25 yards away. The laser of the shot was just a few feet off the top right corner for what was the Roos best look up to that point.
  • In the final minutes each team had a chance with the Lakers getting a breakaway ruled offside and Foster Hutchins having a shot go wide in the final moments of the half.
  • The first half concluded with Oswego leading in shots 9-3 (4-0 on shots on goal) and corner kicks 5-0.
  • Just one minute into the second half, the Roos got their first shot on goal, an attempt from Eric Randall at the corner of the 18-yard-box but was right at Lakers goalkeeper Kyle Rose for an easy save.
  • Despite the early shot, the majority of the second half was played with SUNY Canton on their heels, defending their net in their zone. The Lakers had eight of the next nine shot attempts in the early and middle parts of the second half with plenty of corner kicks to go along with the shots.
  • In the 79th minute the Lakers broke through at last. A bouncing ball around the corner of the 18-yard-box found Tajay Ellis who had no defenders between him and the goal. Bovair had made plenty of saves on the night but couldn't stop this one as Ellis put one out of his reach bottom right for the games first goal.
  • With eight minutes to go, SUNY Canton had their first corner kick of the game. A solid boot from Owen Lebron led to the Roos best chance of the match with a header right in front of the net from Mosley. Even with Mosley outjumping everyone, the Roos leading goal scorer could not place the shot on target as it went out of bounds.
  • The Lakers went on to win the hard-fought 1-0 match with their late game goal in and holding the Roos without a shot in the final seven minutes.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Randall was the only Roo with a shot on goal in the contest. Escobar, Mosley, Christopher Guallpa, and Hayden Brimelow each logged shot attempts.
  • Ellis, the goal scorer for Oswego, was very active in the Lakers offense, leading the team with six total shots, two being on net. Ethan Caruana led the visitors in shots on goal with three.
  • The Lakers stuffed the stat sheet with 22 shots and eight shots on net. The Roos only had one shot on goal in seven shots.
  • Bovair stopped seven of the eight shots he faced for SUNY Canton. Rose made one save for the clean sheet.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos will head downstate to play the Buffalo State Bengals on Saturday, October 1 at 11 a.m.
