Mosley Scores, Lebron Adds an Assist in Road Contest against VTSU Castleton

Castleton, VT – Markel Mosley became the first Roo with multiple goals on the season with his second half tally, but a game-winning goal with 10 minutes left by the VTSU Castleton Spartans sent the SUNY Canton men's soccer team home with a 2-1 loss Sunday afternoon.

THE BASICS
  • Result: VTSU Castleton 2, SUNY Canton 1
  • Location: Dave Wolk Stadium – Castleton, VT
  • Records: SUNY Canton (1-7-1) | VTSU Castleton (4-4-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Spartans had a great early chance just four minutes into the game with a shot inside the 18-yard-box that clanked off the left post.
  • SUNY Canton put on the pressure in the 11th minute, getting a couple of shots off but Castleton was able to deflect and block the majority of the Roos opportunities early on
  • At the 32nd minute marker, the Spartans got a throw in near the corner and had an open shot on net right outside of the top of the 18 that Joey Raap made a diving save on to preserve the scoreless tie.
  • Foster Hutchins had a late shot on goal that Castleton goalkeeper Matt Roy saved, and David Bermeo also had a late shot that was blocked. The Spartans had a free kick right outside the top of the box with 11 seconds left that was deflected high of the net.
  • The two teams entered the locker room in a scoreless tie, with Castleton holding a slight edge over the Roos in shots (7-5), shots on net (3-2), and corner kicks (2-1).
  • After five minutes of no shots to begin the second half, the Roos made what looked to be a routine pass from their sideline up the middle, but the pass was intercepted by Castleton midfielder Charlie Bell. Bell earned himself a breakaway opportunity and he cashed in by beating Roos goaltender Jon Bovair for the game's first goal.
  • SUNY Canton put on some solid pressure with 25 minutes left in the game, eventually leading to a shot by Eric Randall from the corner that was saved by Roy.
  • In the 70th minute, Castleton made a very nonchalant chip up the field in their zone. Demetrius Blake Jr. blocked the pass, leading to a 3v2 from the Roos. Owen Lebron came up with the ball and passed it to Markel Mosley right inside the top of the 18-yard box. Mosley sent it bottom left into the Spartans net past a diving Roy for his second goal of the season to tie the game with 19 minutes to play.
  • With a little more than 10 minutes left, a yellow card by the Roos gave the Spartans a free kick right outside the box and near the goal line. Despite the relatively poor angle to shoot, Matt Spiller for Castleton kicked the ball perfectly into the top right corner beyond the reach of Bovair for a 2-1 lead for the hosts.
  • In the final ten minutes, the Roos had a couple chances, including a shot from Bermeo but the Spartans stalled the clock out at the end and took the 2-1 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Mosley had the lone goal on the day for SUNY Canton and Lebron had his second assist of the year, joining Blake Jr. as the only Roos with two or more assists on the season.
  • Spiller and Bell were the two goal scorers for the Spartans, each being unassisted. Spiller also had four shots, two of which were on net while Jacques Alfani did not score but placed three shots on goal.
  • Castleton beat SUNY Canton in total shots 13-8 and doubled them up on shots on net 8-4. The Spartans took five corner kicks in the game while the Roos only attempted two.
  • Raap, who played the entirety of the first half made three saves while Bovair taking over in the second half also stopped three. On the other side, Castleton's Roy made three saves on the four SUNY Canton shots.

The Roos will head downstate on Wednesday, September 24 at 4 p.m. for a game against the Keuka Wolves in their final non-conference match of the season.
