Roos Face Pioneers in Home Opener

Canton, NY – Sophomore Mackenzie Ryan made eight saves, including two spectacular stops in the second-half, but the SUNY Canton women's soccer team dropped a 7-0 decision to Utica University on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Utica jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as Amber Piersma collected a loose ball in front of the net and quickly elevated it over an outstretched Ryan.
  • Piersma helped the Pioneers double their lead at 9:11 of the first half when she chipped a shot over Ryan from distance and just skirted the ball under the crossball for the 2-0 lead.
  • A pair of goals from Samantha Ferguson pushed the Pioneer lead to 4-0 at the half.
  • Madison Wagner's breakaway just 1:20 into the second half resulted in the fifth goal for Utica and additional goals by Ferguson and Kayla Giovingo put the final at 7-0.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Ferguson led all scorers with three goals.  Piersma scored two more and Wagner finished with a goal and an assist.
  • The Pioneers dominated the stat sheet, leading in shots (23-0), shots on goal (16-0) and corner kicks (7-0).
  • Ryan recorded eight saves, including six in the second half in 81 minutes of action.  Junior Summer Foster allowed one goal in the final nine minutes for the Roos.
  • Goalkeeper Hannah Pcola played the first half for Utica and Emily Duro played in the second.  Neither recorded a save.
