Gamble Nets First Career Goal Against Mighty Oaks

Canton, NY – Junior Elly Gamble scored her first collegiate goal for the SUNY Canton women's soccer team but SUNY ESF scored three goals in less than four minutes at the start of the second half and defeated the Roos 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first half, the Mighty Oaks got on the board early in the second when Taylor Weber split two defenders and placed a shot in the bottom right corner of the net to put SUNY ESF up 1-0.
  • Leah Chavoustie scored a in the 61st minute to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
  • Taylor scored her second goal of the afternoon just forty seconds later to put the Mighty Oaks up 3-0 and tucked away her third goal in the 64th minute to push her team to a 4-0 advantage.
  • The Roos battled back and made their push as the second half continued with senior Shannon Platt striking a shot off the crossbar in the 75th minute.
  • Gamble finally got the Roos on the board in the 76th minute, blasting a shot through the outstretched arms of SUNY ESF goaltender Sophia McCord to make it 4-1.
  • Platt had another golden opportunity in the 86th minute, chipping a shot past McCord, off the crossbar and directly down onto the goal line, but the ball was cleared away before any damage could be done.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Weber led all scorers with the hat trick while Chavoustie and Gamble scored one each.
  • Freshman Kate Whitley recorded three shots on goal to lead the Roos while Platt had two shots ring off the crossbar.
  • Canton had the advantage in shots (14-12) while SUNY ESF had the edge in shots on goal (10-7) and corner kicks (5-4).
  • Junior Summer Foster made her first career start as a goalkeeper and made three saves.
  • McCord made six saves in 81 minutes of action.  Hailey Simmons spelled McCord for the final nine minutes and did not record a save.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos travel down Route 11 to take on Clarkson University under the lights on Tuesday, September 9th at 7 p.m.
