Roos Fall Short in Battle with Pioneers

Canton, NY – The Roos had plenty of chances with five shots on goal, but had nothing to show for it as the SUNY Canton women's soccer team fell 4-0 at the hands of the Alfred State Pioneers Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Alfred State 4, SUNY Canton 0
  • Location: SUNY Canton Turf Field – Canton, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (0-6-0) | Alfred State (2-3-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Early in the first half, possession was evenly split but without any shots on either side.
  • The Pioneers first big chance came in the 12th minute, after Isabella Hoffmann got a pass from the middle of the field for a fastbreak opportunity, however, Summer Foster recovered and blocked a shot from the top of the 18.
  • After a flurry of corner kicks, Alfred State got their first goal on a breakaway chance in the 21-minute-mark. Karlee Hargather got out ahead of the defense, dribbled past goalkeeper Mackenzie Ryan, and put it into a wide-open net for a 1-0 lead.
  • The Roos first shot came off the foot of Caitlin Kelly who had a free kick near midfield. Kelly blasted it, but it was about a foot high of the net.
  • SUNY Canton had a couple of chances off free kicks late in the second half, but the tough defense by the Pioneers prevented the Roos from getting any more shots off.
  • The half ended with a 1-0 lead from Alfred State with the Pioneers also leading the shots 4-1 and enjoying a 7-0 advantage on corner kicks.
  • Less than a minute into the second half, Hailey Hassos won a battle in the 18-yard box and got off an open shot, but Pioneers goaltender Kate Sproul made a diving save on a low ball on the Roos first shot on net of the game.
  • At the 57-minute marker Hargather won a ball battle right inside the 18 and then beat Ryan bottom right as Alfred State doubled their lead.
  • The Roos got two great looks on net with one from Morrow going high on net, but Madeline Cox punched it over the net. On the resulting corner kick, Shannon Platt got a look that Cox dove to her right on, preserving the shutout.
  • Even with the slight momentum though, the Pioneers scored two more times in the 65th minute marker, and in 75th minute to run away with it 4-0 in Canton.
