Vela, Defense Hold Clarkson to One Goal, Roos Drop Tight One in Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – It was a game where Jason Vela tied a career-high with nine saves and the SUNY Canton men's soccer team fought off 20 shots, but the only goal of the game belonged to the undefeated Clarkson Golden Knights who beat the Roos 1-0 Wednesday, September 10.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Clarkson 1, SUNY Canton 0
  • Location: Hantz Field – Potsdam, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (1-5-0) | Clarkson (3-0-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Golden Knights did not absolutely dominate possession in the opening stages, but they did have plenty of opportunities at the net which forced Vela to make three saves in the first 21 minutes.
  • Vela looked sharp, but Clarkson eventually broke the ice in the 26th minute after Noah Partenza beat the Roos in transition, cutting in from the right end line. He then fed Daniel Medina right in front of the net who sent the ball in the Roos net for the game's first goal.
  • Clarkson had several more chances, tacking on four more shots in the half, but the Roos fended off the Golden Knights to keep the hosts to just one goal through the first 45 minutes.
  • In addition to enjoying a 1-0 lead, the Golden Knights had a 9-0 shot advantage along with three corner kicks.
  • Beginning the second half, the Roos were able to get a couple free kicks in the Golden Knights end of the field, but to no avail as SUNY Canton did not get shots off from these.
  • Clarkson continued to bombard SUNY Canton with shots, attempting eight more in the first 20 minutes of the second half.
  • At the 71-minute marker, Chris Escobar got the first Roos shot of the game which was saved by Clarkson goalkeeper Carter Kladstrup.
  • Both Randy Gonzalez and Demetrius Blake Jr. each added a shot in the 75th and 80th minutes respectively, but Clarkson kept the ball out of their zone in the final minutes, and the buzzer sounded with the Golden Knights claiming the 1-0 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
