Baseball Closes out SUNYAC Series with Oswego on Senior Day

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton baseball team closed out a three-game weekend SUNYAC series dropping a pair of games to Oswego State as the team celebrated Senior Day on Saturday.

The Roos recognized their five seniors Kayden Guerin, Hunter LaValley, John LaPorte, Alphonse Fuca and Bradley Mills along with senior Connor Dickinson, who helps the team with strength and conditioning, in a ceremony following Game 1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • Oswego started off the top of the first with runners on second and third with no outs, but Hunter LaValley induced an infield popup and then AJ Campi caught a line drive to short and doubled the runner off at third as the Roos got out of a jam.
  • Canton got on the board first in the bottom of the frame. With one out Lance Phillips
  •  Jr. drew a walk and with two outs Eliezer Vazquez hit a two-run homer to left field.
  • The Lakers took the lead scoring five runs on five hits in the second inning to lead 5-2 after two innings.
  • The Oswego bats recorded another five-run inning in the fifth with five hits as they benefitted from a pair of Canton errors.
  • The Laker bats exploded for six runs on six hits and an error in their final at-bats to earn the 16-2 run-rule win in seven innings.
  • Vazquez, Liam Hohertz, Sal Diaz and Derek Maldonado recorded hits for Canton in the opener.
  • Daniel Winchester led the Lakers going 3-for-5 with a homerun and double driving in four runs. Emil Sander also homered and doubled driving in three runs.
  • Matt Carner picked up the win tossing two innings of scoreless ball with two strikeouts and a walk in relief. Joel Hayner was credited with the no-decision allowing no earned runs in three innings of work.
  • Hunter LaValley took the loss allowing eight earned runs with a strikeout and three walks in 5.1 innings. He threw three scoreless innings, but the Laker bats had two big innings.
 

GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • Oswego scored once in the second and fourth innings and plated three runs on three hits and an error to open a 5-0 lead after four innings in the nightcap.
  • The Lakers added four runs on four hits and an error in the fifth to open a 9-0 lead after their at-bats.
  • Campi got Canton on the board in the fifth with a leadoff double and later advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Phillips Jr. groundout.
  • The visitors added nine runs in the sixth inning and two in the seventh. In Canton's final at-bats Gabe Wainwright led off with a pinch-hit double down the left field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Liam Hohertz drove him in on an RBI single.  
  • Campi, Diaz, Hohertz, Wainwright, Mills and Chris McLean all recorded hits in the nightcap for Canton.
  • Tishawn Featherstone and Dylan Rosenberg recorded three hits each for the Lakers, while Trey McGowan, Sander, Winchester, Anthony Barone and Patrick May all had multi-hit outings.
  • Alex Conrad picked up the win tossing 1.1 innings of scoreless ball with two strikeouts in relief. Sean Dertinger was credited with the no decision as he didn't allow a run in three innings with three strikeouts and two walks.
  • Javier Chico took the loss for the Roos surrendering eight runs with three strikeouts and three walks in 4.2 innings. Maxwell Rose, Tim Voss, Matt Richards and Drew Dabill all threw in relief with Dabill recording the final two outs and a strikeout.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos are scheduled to wrap up SUNYAC play on Sunday when they host Cortland in a single game at 12:30 p.m.
