Vazquez Records Five Hit, Six RBI Day in Doubleheader vs. Wildcats

Cortland, NY – Eliezer Vazquez had a monster day going 5-for-8 with six RBI but the SUNY Canton baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against SUNY Poly on Tuesday in Cortland.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • The Roos got the scoring started with three runs in the top of the first. Eliezer Vazquez singled home Chris McLean who led off the inning with an infield single. Lance Phillips Jr. laced a two out two RBI double to right field to score Sal Diaz and Vazquez.
  • The Wildcats responded with six runs on two hits and three errors scoring five unearned runs after three straight Canton errors with two outs.
  • Poly added three more runs on four hits in the second inning and tacked on seven runs on six hits and two more errors in the fifth inning to open a 16-3 lead after five innings.
  • The Roos plated two runs in the sixth on a Phillips Jr. RBI ground out and Derek Maldonado sacrifice fly to score Mark Maybee Jr.
  • Vazquez concluded the scoring in the seventh bringing home AJ Campi on an RBI single.
  • McLean, Bradley Mills and Vazquez had two hits each with Vazquez driving in two runs, while Phillips Jr. drove in three runs.
  • Luke Landis paced Poly with three hits and three runs, while Quin Hill, Colin Williams and Derek Menechino recorded two hits each with Menechino driving in four runs.
  • Connor Marcello picked up the win tossing three innings of scoreless ball in relief with two strikeouts and two walks.
  • Kayden Guerin was credited with the loss allowing 10 runs, four of which were earned, with two walks in four innings. John Pascarella Jr. and Keegan Franklin gave up three unearned runs each in relief.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • SUNY Poly jumped out to an early lead scoring five runs on five hits and an error in the first inning.
  • Canton got one run back in the bottom of the first when Mills scored Diaz on an RBI single to left.
  • The Wildcats struck for four runs on four hits and an error in the top of the second, but the Roos once again responded this time with five runs on four hits to get within 9-6 after two innings.
  • Diaz was hit by a pitch to score Alfred Pabon before Vazquez hit a bases-clearing three RBI double to left center scoring McLean, Campis and Diaz. Mills concluded the scoring in the second doubling home Vazquez.
  • The Wildcat bats stayed hot as they added five runs on five hits and two more Canton errors to open a 14-6 advantage.
  • In a high scoring affair, the Roos got three runs back on three hits in the third inning to get within 14-9. McLean scored Edilberto Rosado on a ground out and Carlos Planas crossed home after a Diaz ground out. Vazquez concluded the scoring with an RBI single to bring across Campi.
  • Poly added one run each in the fourth and fifth innings and three in the sixth inning for the 19-9 final.
  • Vazquez and Campi led the Roos with three hits each as Vazquez drove in a game-best four runs. Diaz and Mills recorded two hits and two RBI each.
  • Ryan Pelton hit for the cycle leading the Wildcats with five runs, a home run, triple, double and two RBI, while Landis also homered and drove in four runs scoring three times. Hill, Will Orlando, Menechino and Tristan Allen recorded two hits each.
  • Nathaniel MacAlpin picked up the win tossing two innings of scoreless ball in relief.
  • Daniel Aviles took his first loss of the season surrendering four earned runs with a walk in 1.2 innings.
