Hayes and Betancur Record Two Hits Each in Twinbill vs. Tomcats & Lions

Little River, SC – Freshmen Ava Hayes and Bella Betancur both recorded two hits on the day as the Roos fell to Thiel (8-0) and Penn State DuBois (9-1) on Wednesday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach. The Roos had a season-high six hits against Du Bois with five players each recording one hit in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • The Tomcats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning before taking a 3-0 lead over the Roos in the top of the third inning
  • Ava Hayes recorded a hit in the bottom of the third inning with a single to left field to break up a no-hitter.
  • The Tomcats were led by Abby Rottman, Dani Ficeti and Ava Gilmore who recorded two hits each.
  • Thiel scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning to break open an 8-0 advantage.
  • Junior Maggi Yandoh forced nine fly outs in the game and struck out one batter looking.
  • Sophomore Ace Rogers faced five batters in the fifth inning forcing one fly out and one ground out.
  • Becca Landis earned the win for the Tomcats tossing a complete game one hitter with seven strikeouts. Yandoh took the los for Canton surrendering five earned runs with three walks in 4.1 innings.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
 
  • The Roos bats came alive to start the game as Torie Moore, Betancur and Sarah Balcom all recorded singles. Jordyn Tarbox reached first during the inning as well.
  • Canton capitalized on the hot start as Moore scored to make the game 1-0 at the end of the opening inning.
  • The Lions tied the game at 1-1 during the bottom of the second inning.
  • In the top of the third inning Betancur singled while Balcom was able to reach first base on a walk but the game remained tied at one.
  • The Lions once again scored two runs each in the third and fourth innings to make the score 5-1 in favor of Du Bois.
  • Canton began the sixth inning with two hits by Tarbox and Hayes with Balcom reaching first on an error by the Lions.
  • The Lions scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn the run-rule win in six innings.
  • The Roos had a season high six hits during the contest with Betancur leading the way with two.
  • Jessy Frank, Leah Aldous and Theresa Luongo led the Lions with two hits each.
  • Rogers pitched the entire game for the Roos forcing 10 fly outs and 6 groundouts taking the loss allowing eight earned runs in 5.1 innings.
  • Luongo picked up the complete game win for the Lions allowing one earned run with seven strike outs in six innings.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos are off on Thursday before closing out their spring break trip against Penn State Altoona and Franciscan on Friday at 1 and 5 p.m., respectively. Both games will be played at North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.
