Hite Has 11 Kills, Roos Finish 2025 Season with Five-Set Match against Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – Brooke Hite had 11 kills, and the SUNY Canton volleyball team won the match against the Potsdam Bears in many statistical categories, but the final score was not one of them as they dropped the fifth set in heartbreaking fashion 15-13 Saturday afternoon.

After the Bears swept the Roos earlier in the year, SUNY Canton took the first set of this game 25-18, dropped the second and third 25-23, and 25-19 respectively, earned the fourth set victory 25-17, but fell in the fifth set as close as can be 15-13.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Potsdam 3, SUNY Canton 2
  • Location: Maxcy Hall – Potsdam, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (8-21) | St. Lawrence (9-17)
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Roos started ahead 6-5 in the first set, but then Hite took over with three kills in a SUNY Canton 7-2 run as the visitors went up 12-7.
  • The run was all it took because the two teams were quite even the rest of the way. Every time the Bears got within a couple of points, SUNY Canton would respond to bring the lead back to five or six points.
  • The game was 21-18 in favor of the Roos late, and SUNY Canton rattled off four straight points with a kill by McKenna Pelech and three attack errors by the Bears to take the first set 25-18.
  • In the second set, the Roos were out ahead 12-8 early on with Madison Bigelow and Emerson Coulter getting two kills early, but Potsdam tied it at 12 a few moments later.
  • Coulter had another kill to put SUNY Canton ahead 17-15, but Potsdam earned their first lead since early in the set with three straight points for an 18-17 advantage.
  • It was tight the rest of the way with the Roos within a couple of points, but SUNY Canton could not get over the hump and take the lead. Bigelow had a kill to make the set 24-23 in favor of Potsdam, but the Bears scored the final point to win 25-23.
  • The Roos fell behind 5-0 early in the third set but later went on a 6-0 run to go ahead 10-9. Abby Raven had a kill and an ace in this span that gave SUNY Canton their first lead of the set.
  • Despite a point by the Bears to stifle the run, the Roos scored three more points in a row to pull ahead 13-10.
  • However, this was followed by a tough stretch for SUNY Canton. The home team executed a 14-3 run to pull ahead 24-16. Hite had a kill as part of three straight from the Roos, but Potsdam finished the set 25-19 to go ahead 2-1 in the match.
  • SUNY Canton had a much-improved start in the fourth set compared with the third, going up 5-1 and later 14-8.
  • The Roos maintained their advantage between three and six points in the rest of the set as the Bears gifted several points to the Roos with eight attack errors. A late kill by Hite and a service ace by Daycee Bane with SUNY Canton up 24-17 sealed the deal with an eight-point set victory.
  • In a thrilling fifth set, the game was back and forth with each team's runs being responded to, keeping the game tight. Isabella Cruz was fantastic early on in the set with four kills to bring Canton ahead 10-9.
  • After the Bears knotted it at ten, a big 3-0 run from the Roos with a kill by Hite mixed in gave SUNY Canton a 13-10 lead. SUNY Canton though ran into trouble as Potsdam went on to restore the momentum in their favor after scoring four straight points.
  • Roos head coach Cooper Colesante took a timeout faced with the match point, but SUNY Canton fell after a Potsdam kill gave the Bears the senior day victory in five sets.
