Women’s Hockey Showcases Depth, Overwhelms Stevenson 5-1

Reisterstown, MD – Five players scored goals, and strong performances across the board led the SUNY Canton women's hockey team to a sweep of Stevenson in the weekend series with a 5-1 win over the Mustangs Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS
  • Result: SUNY Canton 5, Stevenson 1
  • Location: Reisterstown Sportsplex – Reisterstown, MD
  • Records: SUNY Canton (2-0-0) | Stevenson (0-2-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Shortly after the first 10 minutes, the Roos were set up nicely in the attacking zone. Asha Hanson took a shot from the right point through traffic which Maggie Sehnert made a save on, but Kylah Small picked up the rebound, skated to the left side of the crease and found an opening past Sehnert for the game's first goal.
  • SUNY Canton carried their 1-0 advantage into the dressing room at the conclusion of the first period. Neither team committed a penalty and SUNY Canton led shots on goal 9-3 after 20 minutes.
  • At the 9:36 mark in the second, the Roos took the game's first penalty, but this did not bother SUNY Canton whatsoever. Danika LaLonde won the face-off, then the Roos flung the puck to the opposite end. The puck was not handled well by the Mustangs and Chamonix Jackson was bothersome to the Stevenson defenders. The Mustangs attempted to play it off the right sideboards, but Pancoe picked the pocket of a defender. The puck landed right onto the stick of Jackson who was all alone for the shorthanded goal.
  • Stevenson was still on the power play and ramped up the intensity after the Roos second goal. With the seconds ticking down, Meghan Croyle took a wrist shot right near the right boards. SUNY Canton goaltender Abby Seaman sent it aside with her right pad, but unfortunately, the puck found Emma DeMan who was unaccounted for right outside the crease who proceeded to have the Roos lead to 2-1 at the 8:04 mark of the second half.
  • After a couple more penalties were called, the Roos found themselves on the powerplay with a little more than two minutes left. In the midst of a small SUNY Canton breakout, Isabella Paswaters skated freely in the high slot, taking a shot on Sehnert. The shot was saved, but Bailey Cote dove for it on the left side of the crease and swiped it home for the Roos third goal.
  • The second period concluded with SUNY Canton holding their 3-1 lead and leading the shots battle 22-10.
  • Only four minutes into the final period, Kyra O'Keefe took a shot that went through the top of the crease. Cote chased after it near the corner and fed O'Keefe who was all alone in the low slot. The pass was perfect, and O'Keefe one-timed it into the right side of the net as the Roos took a 4-1 lead.
  • Paswaters scored the Roos fifth goal with 7:46 left in the game and the Roos rolled to the 5-1 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Jackson earned the game-winning tally with her shorthanded goal in the second period. Cote scored a goal and had an assist while Danika LaLonde led SUNY Canton with two helpers. Eight different players logged points in the win, and the Roos eight early season goals have all been scored by different players.
  • DeMan for the Mustangs scored the only goal for Stevenson and had both goals in the weekend series. Meghan Croyle got the primary assist on the play.
  • Each team went 1-for-3 on power play opportunities. The Roos outshot Stevenson by quite a large margin for the second game in the row, winning that battle 38-15.
  • Seaman for the Roos made 14 saves in 15 opportunities in her season debut. Sehnert made her second straight start for the Mustangs and sent aside 33 shots.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos will look to keep rolling at home next weekend for their home opener on Friday, November 7 against the MCLA Trailblazers. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
