Roos Face Buffalo State in SUNYAC Men’s Soccer Action

Buffalo, NY – The SUNY Canton men's soccer team hung tough with 9-1 Buffalo State Saturday, but two second-half goals from the hosting Bengals gave them a 2-0 win on their senior night down in Buffalo.

THE BASICS

  • Location: Coyer Field – Buffalo, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (2-10-1, 0-3-0 SUNYAC) | Buffalo State (10-1-0, 3-0-0 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State got an early shot less than one minute in which Joey Raap made a sliding stop on.
  • The hosting Bengals had two more shots until the 29th minute in which the Roos earned a corner kick leading to a shot on net by Justin Sarmiento. Buffalo State goaltender Carson Smith made a jumping catch on what turned out to be the only shot attempt by the
  • Things got scary on a couple occasions for the Roos with some immense pressure by the Bengals. Buffalo State got a good look with Raap forced well out of the net but the Roos defense backed up their 'keeper and booted the ball away.
  • In minute 33, Diego Rivera was all alone on the SUNY Canton endline, but the poor angle made it difficult to get a shot on target and he missed just wide.
  • The scoreless half one ended with the Roos trailing 6-1 in shots.
  • With 33 minutes left in the second half, a high ball right around the Roos penalty shot marker led to a Bengal and Raap each jumping for it. Both players missed and the ball found Joseph Desmonie at the top of the 18 who put into the Roos goalie-less net for the game's first goal.
  • With the Bengals now up 1-0, the Roos continued to struggle with getting the ball out of their zone. Over the next 25 minutes, Buffalo State had nine shots to go along with several corner kicks while SUNY Canton had none.
  • With just under six minutes remaining, the Roos committed a foul in their 18-yard-box leading to a penalty shot goal for the Bengals.
  • SUNY Canton earned themselves a late corner kick and a shot from Randy Gonzalez, but the Roos were blanked 2-0 in their first road SUNYAC matchup.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Sarmiento had the lone shot on goal for the Roos in the first half. Both Gonzalez and Demetrius Blake Jr. each had one shot attempt.
  • Rivera was the star of the show for the Bengals with a goal and an assist while also leading the home team in shots with five and shots on goal with two. Desmonie opened the scoring with the first Buffalo State goal.
  • The Bengals beat the Roos in total shots (20-3), shots on net (7-1), and corner kicks (10-2).
  • Raap was 5-for-7 on saves for the Roos, going the distance by playing all 90 minutes. Smith made just one save in the shutout.
