THE BASICS
- Result: SUNY Canton 3, Stevenson 1
- Location: Reisterstown Sportsplex – Reisterstown, MD
- Records: SUNY Canton (1-0-0) | Stevenson (0-1-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Roos generated many chances and solid offensive zone time early and totaled eight shots on goal in the first nine minutes.
- The Mustangs tested Molly Lenihan for the first time with 8:24 left in the first period and shortly after got a power-play on a SUNY Canton tripping penalty. Stevenson got a couple shots late in the man-advantage, but no results.
- The Roos continued to put on the pressure late in the first period and earned their best chance with a breakaway by Isabella Paswaters, but she could not find the back of the net.
- Despite the score at 0-0 after 20 minutes, the Roos dominated shots on goal 16-5 with goaltender Maggie Sehnert leading the Mustangs defense on 16 saves.
- Stevenson's best look came just a couple minutes inside a half after an errant neutral zone pass by SUNY Canton turned into trouble with a Stevenson 2v1 opportunity, however, Lenihan made a pair of diving saves to keep the game knotted at 0.
- SUNY Canton drew a penalty on Stevenson with just under 13 minutes left in the period but could not take advantage with only one shot in the two minutes of 5v4.
- However, after drawing a penalty themselves, the Roos won a puck battle against the end boards which turned into a 2-on-1 with Pancoe leading the charge. Pancoe elected to keep the puck and flicked a wrist shot past Sehnert in the left faceoff dot. The goal ended Sehnert's perfect night between the pipes and get the Roos on the board for a 1-0 lead off Pancoe's shorthanded goal with 8:41 left to play in the game.
- With slightly more than 3:08 left to play in the second period, the Roos got it past the Stevenson forecheckers in SUNY Canton's end of the ice leading to a rush the other way. Chamonix Jackson sent a pass to Taylor Stoll in high slot which went off her skate, then off a Mustang stick to Schemenauer who scored the second goal of the game for SUNY Canton. Stoll and Jackson earned assists on the play.
- The second period ended with the score at 2-0, and the Roos controlling the shots on goal up 28-10.
- At the 10-minute mark of the third quarter, SUNY Canton drew another penalty. On the power play, Lucy Beal passed to Danika LaLonde inside the left point, then the puck went to Riley Andzel in the corner. Andzel skated in to put a shot on the Mustangs, but her first try was blocked. However, Andzel stayed with it and put on a backhand shot that went in before Sehnert could react, giving the Roos a 3-0 lead.
- After Stevenson had very little going for them offensively in the third quarter, they at last scored on a power play after Emma DeMan skated around the left side and sent a wrister top right for the well-placed goal as the Mustangs avoided the shutout.
- Stevenson only had one more shot the rest of the game, and the Roos drew a late penalty which kept Sehnert into the net even with one minute remaining. After pulling the goalie late, no shots came from the move and the Roos earned the 3-1 victory in their opening game.
