Ryan Shines with New Career-Best 19 Saves Versus First-Place Cortland

Cortland, NY – Sophomore goaltender Mackenzie Ryan made a career-high 19 saves in the SUNY Canton women's soccer team's 6-0 loss to the SUNYAC-best Cortland Red Dragons Wednesday evening.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Cortland 6, SUNY Canton 0
  • Location: T. Fred Holloway Field – Cortland, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (0-16-0, 0-8-0 SUNYAC) | Cortland (10-2-4, 6-0-1 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams matched each other in shots early on with each squad getting two off through the first nine minutes. SUNY Canton's shots were long balls by Kate Whitley and Shannon Platt.
  • In the 10th minute, the Red Dragons got a cross from the right side. After a fight for the ball right in front of the net, Tyla Vuotto gained possession just inside the 18 and started the scoring with a well-placed goal into the top right corner of the net.
  • With a 1-0 lead, the hosting Red Dragons were all over the Roos defense with plenty of shots and offensive action in the remaining time of the first half.
  • Despite Platt's long distance shot in the 33rd minute, Cortland had 15 shots in the final 35 minutes of the half, however Ryan made diving save after diving save and the half ended with SUNY Canton still in it down just 1-0.
  • Shots on goal were 18-3 in favor of the Red Dragons in the first half with 11 of these kicks on net. The Roos also fended off five corner kicks.
  • Unfortunately for the Roos though, the Red Dragons came out firing on all cylinders to begin the second half, scoring four goals in less than six minutes to run away with it 5-0.
  • SUNY Canton could not convert on the other end, going shotless in the second half while Cortland canned one more goal in the 58th minute for the 6-0 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Platt led the way with two shots for the Roos and Whitley had one.
  • Vuotto for SUNY Cortland went for the hat trick with a trio of goals and five shots on net. Leah Rehm, Ashlynn McGrorty, and Devyn Kelly also scored for the Red Dragons.
  • The league leaders had the edge in shots (39-3), shots on net (26-0), and corner kicks (13-0)
  • Ryan saved 19 shots in the game, beating her previous career-high of 18 earlier this season (9/16/25 vs. St. Lawrence) while Olivia Rouse and Nicole Blazo had the combined shutout for Cortland.
  • Ryan's saves were just five shy of the SUNY Canton single-game saves record of 24 set by Skylar Williams last season (9/4/24 vs. Elmira).
