Oneonta, NY – Senior
Shannon Platt tallied her first goal of the season with a penalty kick in the first half, but the Oneonta Red Dragons defeated the SUNY Canton women's soccer team 9-1 Saturday afternoon.
THE BASICS
- Result: Oneonta 9, SUNY Canton 1
- Location: Red Dragon Field – Oneonta, NY
- Records: SUNY Canton (0-15-0, 0-7-0 SUNYAC) | Oneonta (3-7-3, 1-3-2 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Red Dragons were able to strike first in the fourth minute. A free kick in the corner led to a shot at the top of the six-yard-box by Karsyn Kondracki. Mackenzie Ryan deflected it off the crossbar, but Kondracki followed up her shot and scored on the put back.
- About halfway through the first half, Oneonta sent a long ball to Violet Mattoni who was out ahead of the defense for a breakaway. Ryan came charging out of the net, but Mattoni still got a shot off which missed off the right post. Mattoni though recovered and for the second time, the Red Dragons got themselves a put-back goal for a 2-0 lead.
- Oneonta scored their third goal a little while after, but the Roos got something brewing in the 28th minute. A long ball ahead to Maddie Armstrong led to a race for the ball between Armstrong and Red Dragons goaltender Bryanna Meehan.
- Armstrong was knocked to the ground by Meehan in the chase and with the foul occurring inside the 18, SUNY Canton was awarded a penalty shot. Senior Shannon Platt earned the honors of the kick and delivered by sending the bottom shot left for her first goal of the season as the Roos trailed 3-1.
- Unfortunately for SUNY Canton through, the Red Dragons had none of the Roos goals and scored twice more in the half while dominating possession for the rest of the first 45 minutes.
- The half concluded with Oneonta leading 5-1 and holding an edge on shots 14-1 (8-1 shots on goal).
- The Roos were primarily pinned back in their zone for the majority of the second half while the Red Dragons kept generating chances for themselves.
- Oneonta went on to hold SUNY Canton shotless the entire second half while scoring four more times. The final buzzer sounded with the Red Dragons leading 9-1.
