Raap Stops Nine in SUNYAC Matchup Against Oneonta

Canton, NY – The reigning SUNYAC Defensive Player of the Week Joey Raap made nine saves, but the SUNY Canton men's soccer team fell 2-0 at the hands of the Oneonta Red Dragons Saturday night at the Turf Field.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Oneonta 2, SUNY Canton 0
  • Location: SUNY Canton Turf Field – Canton, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (3-13-1, 1-6-0 SUNYAC) | Oneonta (9-3-3, 4-1-2 SUNYAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Roos looked good from the get-go and David Bermeo got a great look from the top of the 18-yard-box that Oneonta goalkeeper James Cintron was forced to make a diving stop on.
  • After the Red Dragons got off a few shots, in the 11th minute, the Roos made an ill-advised pass up the middle of the field in their zone. Zach Rabadi for Oneonta intercepted the pass and took off all alone down to the Roos goal.
  • Raap came out to contest, but Rabadi set it out to reach of Raap's right for a goal and a 1-0 visitor advantage.
  • The rest of the half was a fast-paced back-and-forth game with each side generating plenty of opportunities offensively. Oneonta had 11 more shots through the first 45 with five of these being on net.
  • The Roos entered the break with five shots, including two from Demetrius Blake Jr. but only Bermeo's early shot was on target. The first half ended with a 1-0 score and Oneonta leading shots 15-5 and corner kicks 3-2.
  • Five minutes into the second half, Oneonta's Imari Harris was taken down right in front of the Canton net. The clock stopped and the Red Dragons were awarded a penalty kick. Dillon Kelly took the kick and beat Raap bottom left as Oneonta doubled their lead early in the second half.
  • Both teams tightened up defensively as shots on goal were much more sparring in the second half than in the first. Raap added two more nice saves in the game, but SUNY Canton had just two shots on net, both coming off long kicks from Hayden Brimelow.
  • The Roos had decent offensive zone time, but nothing that led to threatening shots as Oneonta showed off their stingy defense that has only allowed an average of one goal per game.
  • The Roos failed to get a shot off in the final 15 minutes and fell at home 2-0 to the Red Dragons.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Brimelow, coming off the bench, led the Roos in total shots with three as well as shots on net with two. Bermeo had the only other shot on target for the Roos.
  • Kelly and Rabadi had the tallies for the road team, both of which were unassisted. Rabadi along with Milton Mancias Magana paced the offense for Oneonta with three shot attempts a-piece.
  • Total shots were 22-9 in favor of the Red Dragons who also had 11 shots on target to the Roos three. Oneonta also tripled the Roos in corner kicks 9-3.
  • Cintron made three saves as he earned the shutout. Raap was a solid 8-for-10 on the night. In 12 games this season, Raap has an .806 save percentage which is good for third in the SUNYAC among qualifying players.
