Plattsburgh, NY – Coming off a seven-save shutout against Potsdam on Wednesday, sophomore goalkeeper
Joey Raap had a career-high 11 saves against his former team the Plattsburgh State Cardinals, however it was the hosting Cardinals that came out on top of the SUNY Canton men's soccer team 2-0 when it was all said and done Saturday night.
THE BASICS
- Result: Plattsburgh 2, SUNY Canton 0
- Location: Field House Soccer/Lacrosse Complex – Plattsburgh, NY
- Records: SUNY Canton (3-11-1, 1-4-0 SUNYAC) | Plattsburgh (7-2-4, 2-2-1 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Plattsburgh had five shots in the first 10 minutes but none of them were on target.
- In the 11th minute, the Cardinals got their first goal off a forward pass towards the intersection between the end line and the 6-yard-box. Xavier Kamba, with the ball down low, connected with Declan Gallagher who cut in from the middle and placed it bottom left on the one-timer.
- The Roos earned themselves a fastbreak in the 19th minute with several Roos finding themselves out ahead to the defense with numbers. This led to a great look from Chris Escobar right inside the 18, but it went wide left.
- Other than the Escobar shot, not much went SUNY Canton's way the rest of the half with the Cardinals pouring on 10 shots in the final 25 minutes.
- The first half concluded with Plattsburgh leading shots 19-1 and 7-0 in shots on goal in addition to their 1-0 lead.
- The Cardinals doubled their lead in the 68th minute after a crossing pass by Danny Perry was centered to Rocco Ruscitto near the goal. Ruscitto's athleticism was on display as he leaped into the air and beat all the Roo defenders for an incredible header goal.
- Plattsburgh continued to shine on both ends the rest of the game, limiting the Roos only two shots by Eric Randall in minute number 69 and Josh Kubik with under two minutes to go, and the Roos were blanked by the Cardinals on the road.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- There were just three shots attempts from the Roos all game, those belonging to Escobar, Randall, and Kubik.
- Gallagher and Ruscitto scored the two goals for the Cardinals with Perry and Kamba earning the helpers.
- The home team led in total shots (29-3), shots on net (13-0), and corner kicks (11-1).
- Joey Raap made a career-high 11 saves on the 13 shots on goal he faced. Matthew D'lppolito had a quiet day not being forced to make a save in his team's shutout win.
