Men’s Basketball Battles Bengals Down to the Wire

Canton, NY – The Roos roared out to a strong start but the game came down to the final minute as visiting Buffalo State survived with a 64-60 SUNYAC win on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos dominated play over the first 10 minutes of the game holding the Bengals to just four points to get out to a 20-4 lead following a Bryon Streb layup.
  • The Bengals responded with an 18-2 run over the next five minutes to knot things up at 22 apiece after a dunk from Chisom Ani.
  • Canton went into intermission with a slim 31-30 lead. Streb led Canton with 12 first-half points while Kevin Goode Jr. had 10. Bryce Williams recorded 10 points for Buffalo State.
  • The Roos opened a five point lead early in the second half after an Eli Larson layup (44-39).
  • After the Bengals trimmed the Canton lead to one (52-51), the Roos responded with a 5-0 run to open up a six point lead (57-51) after a Chris Nastasi three with 6:57 to play. That was the largest lead for either team in the second half.
  • Trailing by just two with 25 seconds remaining there was a bang-bang play on a Williams drive as the Roos were whistled for a blocking foul.  Williams converted on the basket to make it a two possession game.
  • Streb knocked down a pair of free throws with 16 seconds remaining to trim the deficit to two and the Bengals split a pair of free throws as Canton had a last second three to tie it that was just off the mark.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Streb led all players with 24 points and added eight rebounds, while Goode Jr. totaled 21 points and four rebounds. Larson was just one rebound short of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
  • Zee Johnson and Williams posted 17 points each for the Bengals, while Nate Severson had nine points.
  • The Roos shot 40% from the field and 29% from three-point range, while the Bengals hit 35% and 31%, respectively.
  • Canton had advantages in rebounds (41-31) and points in the paint (28-22). Buffalo State had the edge in points off turnovers (21-10) and bench points (10-5).

The Roos return to SUNYAC action on Tuesday when they visit Oneonta at 7:30 p.m.
