Guallpa and Mosley Score to Lead Roos Past Broncos

Canton, NY – Christopher Guallpa and Markel Mosley each recorded their first collegiate goals to lead the SUNY Canton men's soccer team to a 2-1 win against visiting SUNY Delhi on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos had a tremendous opportunity early when Trevor Jacobs played a cross into the box to John Bustamante who one-timed a shot across the face of goal that went off the left post and stayed out.
  • Delhi found the back of the net in the 24th minute off a corner kick by Matthew Pozo. The ball was loose in the box and headed by a Canton defender off a Bronco player before Stephen Birmingham kicked the ball in the open net just in front of the goal line.
  • The Roos got the equalizer at the 41:00 mark when Guallpa collected a loose ball and ripped a shot from 25 yards out off the crossbar and in.
  • Canton held a 4-2 shots on goal advantage in the opening half as the teams went to intermission tied at one.
  • The Roos took their first lead of the game in the 58th minute when Hayden Brimelow played a cheeky flick forward lifting a pass forward to Mosley. Mosley one-timed a left-footed volley high just under the crossbar past Bronco keeper Salvatore Meloni.
  • The Broncos had a good chance with just under seven minutes remaining but Jason Vela stopped Jared Daragjati's attempt from the right side to keep the one goal advantage.  
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Roos held the upper hand in shots (14-7) while owning a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. The Broncos had a slim edge in corner kicks (7-5).
  • Six different Roos registered a shot on goal apiece in Guallpa, Mosley, Bustamante, Eric Randall and Chris Escobar.
  • Vela made three saves in his first career win, while Meloni stopped two shots for Delhi.
 

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos are back in action on Wednesday when they visit SUNY Poly at 6 p.m.
