Vela Stops Nine in Debut as Roos Battle Raptors

Annandale-on-Hudson, NY – Playing in their second game in less than 24 hours, the SUNY Canton men's soccer team displayed a solid defensive effort, but dropped a 1-0 decision to Bard College on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Midway through the first half, junior Owen Lebron found a rebound in tight and blasted a shot from in close that was barely deflected wide by a Raptor defender to keep the game scoreless.
  • Bard's Luca Costanzo broke the scoreless tie at 34:18 of the first half, perfectly placing a high, arching corner kick just inside the far post past freshman goalkeeper Jason Vela.
  • Both teams continued to play tight defense throughout the second half making the final 1-0 Bard.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Junior Mason Holmes directed two shots on goal for the Roos with Lebron finishing with one.
  • Bard held the edge in shots on goal 11-3 and corner kicks 6-1.
  • Vela finished the game with nine saves in his first collegiate start.  Will Beane made two stops in the first half for the Raptors, Julian Landau did not face a shot in relief.
