Balcom Records Four Hits as Softball Opens Weekend Series Against Broncos on Senior Day

Canton, NY – Sarah Balcom recorded four hits on the day but the SUNY Canton softball team dropped both ends of a NAC doubleheader to visiting SUNY Delhi on Friday.

The Roos recognized their four graduating players Sophia Gundersen, Caitlyn Reed, Emma Hayes and Taryn Morrissey in a ceremony prior to Game 1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • The opening game was a pitcher's duel early on as neither team scored over the first four innings.
  • The Roos broke the scoreless drought with a pair of runs in the fifth on a two RBI single from Caitlyn Reed that scored Sophia Gundersen and Taryn Morrissey.
  • The Bronco bats came up big late plating five runs on three hits and an error in the sixth and three more on two hits and two walks in the seventh.
  • Gundersen led the Roos going 2-for-3 with a run, while Morrissey, Reed, Andrea Cary, Balcom, Talor Ferrucci, Emma Hayes and Ace Rogers had one each.
  • Kayla Beers led Delhi with three hits, while Kayleigh Allen had two and Angelina Dickel drove in four runs.
  • Danielle Seymour picked up the win for Delhi tossing a complete game giving up two runs with five strike outs and a walk.
  • Reed took the loss for Canton surrendering seven earned runs with four strike outs and four walks in seven innings.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • The nightcap proved to be a high-scoring affair as the teams combined for 21 runs on 33 hits. Delhi got on the board first with a run in the top of the first.
  • The Roos responded with two runs in the second on a Rogers RBI single to score Balcom and a steal by Torie Moore.
  • The Broncos erupted for five runs on four hits and an error in the third to take a brief 6-2 lead.
  • Canton bounced right back putting up a six spot in the bottom of the third. Cary singled home Morrissey, Ferrucci scored on a wild pitch, Morrissey singled home Rogers, Reed singled home Emma Hayes and Caitlyn Reed plated Hayes on a base hit.
  • The Roos tacked on another run in the fourth when Balcom scored from first after a dropped fly ball as the hosts led 9-6 after four innings.
  • Delhi got one back in the fifth inning and exploded for five runs on four hits and an error scoring four of their five runs unearned in the inning as they secured the 12-9 win.
  • Balcom led the Roos with three hits, three runs and an RBI, while Morrissey, Reed, Moore and Ferrucci had two hits each.
  • Beers paced Delhi with four hits, while Sidney Cooper, Carolina Watson, Cayla Moroni and Riley Martin had three hits each.  
  • Seymour earned her second win of the day in relief tossing 4.1 innings without allowing an earned run and striking out four.
  • Reed took the loss giving up six runs with a strike out and walk in 4.2 innings.
