Cary & Balcom Drive in One Run Each to Open Season at Clarkson

Potsdam, NY – Andrea Cary and Sarah Balcom each drove in a run on the day, but the SUNY Canton softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to open the season at Clarkson University on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • Clarkson jumped out to a 4-0 lead after their at-bats in the opening inning walking in three runs and scoring another on an RBI single.
  • The Knights added one run in the second and a six spot in the third as they cruised to the 11-0 win in five innings.
  • Katy Aldous, Elizabeth Greco and Kaya Johnson had two hits each for Clarkson combining to drive in six runs.
  • Devin Fitzpatrick threw a perfect game with seven strike outs sitting down all 15 batters she faced in the run-rule win in the opener.
  • Caitlyn Reed took the loss surrendering 11 runs with two strike outs and six walks in four innings.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • The hosts scored three runs each in the first and third innings and four runs apiece in the second and fourth frames to take a commanding 14-0 lead after four innings of play in the nightcap.
  • The Roos got on the board with a pair of runs in their final at-bats of the day. Gabby Cunningham drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
  • With two outs Priscilla Soule drew another free pass and Cary laced an RBI double down the left field line to score Cunningham. Balcom followed with an RBI single up the middle to complete the scoring.
  • In addition to Cary and Balcom's hits Taryn Morrissey also recorded a single in Game 2.
  • Aldous went 4-for-4 with two runs and 3 RBI for Clarkson, while Fitzpatrick hit a grand slam.
  • Lily Corrice picked up the win for Clarkson tossing four innings allowing one hit with eight strike outs and three walks.
  • Reed took the loss allowing 14 runs with a strike out and two walks in four innings.  
     
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos are next scheduled for action on March 22nd when they travel to Houghton for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
