Cary and Cunningham Record Two Hits Each in Twinbill vs. Saints

Canton, NY – Andrea Cary and Elly Cunningham recorded two hits each in the nightcap, but the SUNY Canton softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against visiting St. Lawrence on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • The Saints got on the board first with three runs in the opening inning on a three-run homer from Meredith Rose.
  • The Roos got a runner to third base with one out in both the second and third innings but were unable to bring their first run across as St. Lawrence got out of the jam both times.
  • St. Lawrence tacked on six runs in the fourth on five hits, a hit by pitch and two walks.
  • The Saints added seven more runs on five hits and two errors to earn the run-rule win in five innings.
  • Allison Kloft, Sofia Camillieri, Emily Crain and Caelen Jahnle all had multi-hit outings for the Saints, while Rose drove in four runs and Kloft and Crain had 2 RBI each.
  • Isabelle Wilson picked up the win tossing three innings of scoreless ball with four walks in three innings. Layne Fritz and Olivia Caporale threw an inning each with a walk each in relief.
  • Caitlyn Reed took the loss allowing 13 earned runs with two strike outs and seven walks in five innings.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
 
  • St. Lawrence got on the board first with an RBI ground out in the first inning of the nightcap. The Saints added a pair of unearned runs in the second scoring on a throwing error and obstruction call.
  • Canton got on the board in the second when Torie Moore reached on an error scoring Reed.
  • The Saints added a run each in the third, fourth and fifth innings to open a 6-1 lead heading to the bottom of the fifth.
  • The Roo bats came alive with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Cary doubled to lead off the inning and Emma Hayes placed an RBI single through the left side with two outs to score Cary. Cunningham followed with a two-run homer to left field. Back-to-back singles from Moore and Talor Ferrucci kept the two out rally alive and Moore scored on an RBI infield single before the Saints recorded the final out of the inning.
  • With Canton within 6-5 after five innings the St. Lawrence bats exploded for seven runs on five hits in the sixth inning to earn the 13-5 run rule win in six innings.
  • Cary and Cunningham had two hits each, while six other Roos recorded hits.
  • Maeve Thompson paced the Saints with three hits and 2 RBI while Rose had a double and 3 RBI.
  • Layne Fritz picked up the win tossing three innings in relief allowing four runs with three strike outs and two walks.
  • Reed took the loss surrendering 10 earned runs with two walks in six innings.
     
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos are back in action on Tuesday when they visit Plattsburgh State for a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
