Maldonado Records Two Hits in Nightcap Against Hilbert

Auburn, NY – Derek Maldonado went 2-for-3 in the nightcap on Tuesday but the SUNY Canton baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Hilbert College on Tuesday at Falcon Park in Auburn.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • The Roos opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. Nick Shoemaker drew a leadoff walk and scored on a John LaPorte triple to right field. LaPorte would later score after Canton grounded into a double play.
  • Hilbert responded with two runs of their own in the first and third innings and one in the second to take a 5-2 lead after three.
  • The Roos tied things up bringing three runners across in the fourth. Edilberto Rosado drew a leadoff walk and Mike Henry reached on an error before Frank Nieto drew another free pass to load the bases with no outs. Rosado scored on a wild pitch as both runners moved up and Shoemaker brought home Henry on a sacrifice fly. LaPorte reached base on the third walk of the inning and Nieto scored on an Alphonse Fuca RBI ground out.
  • The Hawks had a huge two inning stretch exploding for three runs in the fifth and five in the sixth to take a 13-5 lead after six innings.
  • Canton got one back in the seventh on a Maxwell Rose RBI single to center scoring Nick Barone who had a one out double to left.
  • LaPorte, Fuca and Rose had a hit and RBI each for the Roos.
  • Patrick Whelan, Jack Duffek, Dustin Hendrix and Emmanuel McClain had two hits each for Hilbert with McClain and Duffek combining to drive in five runs.
  • Nolan Evans picked up the no decision for Hilbert surrendering three earned runs with six walks and four strike outs in 3.2 innings. David Alessi was credited with the win tossing 1.1 innings of scoreless ball in relief, while Brendan Walsh earned the save tossing the final two innings allowing one earned run.
  • Eliezer Vaquez took the loss for Canton allowing seven earned runs with three walks and a strike out in 4.1 innings.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • Hilbert continued from its strong ending to the opener on Tuesday combining for eight runs over the first three innings in the nightcap. The Hawks scored three in the first, one in the second and four in the third.
  • Hilbert tacked on two more runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to lead 11-0 after five innings.
  • The Roos got one back in the seventh. Shoemaker reached on an error with two outs and Fuca walked. Barone legged out an infield single and Shoemaker scored on the error.
  • Maldonado led the Roos with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate, while four other players had one hit each. Jairo Santos led Hilbert with two hits and drove in four runs.  
  • Ronald Mort picked up the win tossing four innings of scoreless ball with five strike outs and two walks.
  • Michael Sandarr took the loss surrendering eight total runs in two innings but three Canton errors proved costly.

The Roos are back in action for a doubleheader on Wednesday against Utica at Onondaga Community College at 1 p.m.
