Barone Hits Grand Slam, Drives in Five Runs vs. Lakeland

Auburndale, FL – Sophomore Nick Barone had a double and a grand slam driving in five runs on the day as the Roos were within one after five innings, but six unanswered runs gave Lakeland University a 13-6 win against the SUNY Canton baseball team on Friday in Florida.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lakeland got on the board first tallying six runs in the second inning with three hits and three errors as five of the six runs were unearned.
  • Canton got two runs back in the third inning. Jake Detlefsen drew a leadoff walk and Frank Nieto followed with an RBI double down the left field line scoring Detlefsen from first. Nick Barone laced a two out double to left field to score Alfred Pabon who reached on a dropped third strike wild pitch.
  • The Muskies scored one more in the fifth on an RBI single to take a 7-2 lead.
  • The Roos rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Mike Henry drew a leadoff walk, Alfredo Pabon followed with a bunt single and Eliezer Vazquez walked to load the bases. Nick Barone hit a grand slam to left field for his first homer of the season.
  • The Muskies added three runs in the sixth on a two run homer and an RBI double to open a 10-6 advantage after six innings.
  • The Roos threatened in the seventh with the bases loaded with one out but a fielder's choice and strike out ended the threat.
  • Lakeland tacked on two runs on a pair of RBI singles in the eighth and an RBI base hit in the ninth for the 13-6 final.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Barone led the Canton bats with the double, home run and five RBI. Edilberto Rosado also went 2-for-3, while Nick Shoemaker, Josue Ortega, Pabon, Detlefsen and Nieto all had one hit each.
  • Tucker Gegenfurtner went 4-for-5 for Lakeland, while Landon Mani and Chris Day had three hits each. Kellen Hodges, Zack Keegan, Dylan Costello and Jacob Wollschlager all had multi-hit outings.
  • Cam Frazier picked up the win for Lakeland tossing five innings allowing five earned runs with three strike outs and three walks.
  • Michael Sandarr took the loss allowing six runs only one of which was earned with a walk in 1.1 innings.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos are back in action on Saturday for the final game of their spring break trip. They square off with Knox College at 9:30 a.m. at Lake Bonny Park Field #1.
